AKGC1000s + ua-5 (phantom power question)
« on: July 11, 2005, 12:06:39 PM »
Hello.

I have been taping with a pair of 1000's for close to a year now. Just recently I purchased a ua-5 for laptop taping.

Getting a chance to use it for the first time this Wed. and had a simple question.

To take advantage of the ua-5's phantom power, do I need to have the 9V battery in the mics and the switch set to on? Or will that somehow 'override' the phantom power from the ua-5?

Thanks for your time.

Doesn't the phantom power from the ua-5 provide an increase in sound quality (es. in loud environments)?

i only use mine with phantom power. why worry about carrying batteries when you can use the full 48v phantom power in the UA-5 instead of 9v batteries?

I know, but do you have to have batteries in and switched to 'on' for it to take the phantom power?

No. The mic does not have to have a battery in it and it does not have to be turned on.

my friend ran those mics into a V3 and when the battery was in, the phantom didn't work, but when the batterys were out the phantom worked

Well I played around with it a bit today and you can run the Phantom without the 9V in the mics, but the switch has to be on.

True indeed, but there have been some really, really good tapes made with this setup.

Do a search over at the LMA for "Steven Gatto" (this may be who ya'll are talking about), he ran that for over a year, and has a couple dozen Derek Trucks shows on the archive - and they're all fantastic.
