well, i just purchased the Linksys wireless routed for my laptop. Great purchase!
I am testing out how the speeds are with it and so far so good. However, it seems that when using BT, i am now firewalled. I went to the Linksys.com support site and they say that you cannot disable the firewall....is this true??
bummer if it is.
-
you got to forward your ports 6881-6999 i believe.
-
Nope, I have linksys and can't get unfirewalled, Ive forwarded the ports and everything. it sucks!
-
are you sure you matched up your IP address correctly? I know it sounds like an easy thing but if its routed to the wrong system it wont work. Ive been guilty of that when my ISP changes the last digits of my IP addy.
1. http://192.168.1.1
2. leave name blank, pass is "admin"
3. click applications and gaming
4. fill in start: 6881, end: 6888
5. complate IP address
6. click enable and you should be gold.

hmmm. works for me. are use sure your ip on the comp you use bt is enabled for port forwarding?

Linksys Firewall Router
Access your Linksys Firewall Router's web admin page, according to the instructions in the manual for your router. You will probably need to enter a password. At the top of the web page there is a series of navigational links, and you want the one that says "Advanced". From there, move on to "Forwarding". Find an empty row in the form on that page, and fill in the name ("BitTorrent"), the port range (6881 to 6889), check the TCP box, and set the IP address to the one that your computer is. Check the Enable box then click the Apply button to save the changes.

I've done that, Im still firewalled... hmmm

I think those directions exactly follow the router, yes. But its a little different with the wirelass router, which is the step by steps i have above. I have both, and they are set up just slightly different.
-
How do I know what my IP is?
-
One last little thing is it is good to give your computer a static IP on your wireless network so the ip address you forward the ports to is always the same for your computer. If you have other computers connected and you restart your laptop it has the chance of being given a different IP than the one you had before. Make your DNS servers and default gateway the 192.168.1.1 address which is the router.
Hope that helps just a little more.
-
Go to a command prompt and type IPCONFIG/ALL and it will give you your IP
-
i see you have an AOL mess name... right click in a window and insert IP address
there it is on your network
or you can see it here: www.whatismyip.com

they will be different, but the one from AOL should match when you do the port fowarding.
-
Okay, maybe Im not forwarding the ports to my machine, on the linksys page, where you forward the ports, it has a space for the IP That looks like this: 192.168.1__ with a blank space to fill it in. The IP on this page: www.whatismyip.com looks nothing like that. Am I retarded? What am I doing wrong???
-
youre not retarted alex. they are suring your actual ip address. when you use a router. you use Network Address Translation (NAT). this uses private subnetted addresses instead of your acyual one cause you onlyu paid for one but are using multiple ip addresses. you need to set the 192.168.1.xxx as your ip address that forwards ports.

yeah, thats the IP going into the router. Coming out of each port of the router is another address for each computer plugged in. They will have those first series of numbers and then something like 100 or 101... thats the blank you have to fill. I was thinking if you have AOL mess you can easily check it by right clicking in a mess window and Insert > Ip addresss and it will look like that.

Same as what the others have said.
Here's how you do it.
1) Right click the 2 little monitors icon (wireless network connection )in the right corner of the screen and select "Status"
2) Under the "support" tab write down the numbers for IP address and Default gateway.
3) type the default gateway number into your address line of your internet browser
4) the username and password are the same: admin
5) select the applications and gaming tab
6) in the 1st line type in
applic start end protocol ip address enable
------ ------- ----- ----------- -------------- ---------
anyname 6881 6999 tcp xxx.xxx.x.___ check
the last three numbers of the ip address should match the ip address that you wrote down in step 1 (the address for the computer that you want to forward these ports to).
If you are running norton internet security you will have do something similar in that program as well.
Josh
-
what does the "protocol" actually do? I have it selected as BOTH and it opens up the ports on BT.
-
"If you are running norton internet security you will have do something similar in that program as well."
it is damn near impossible to poke holes through NIS.
-
IM NOT FIREWALLED ANYMORE!!! YEA!! THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE! +Ts ALL AROUND!

NICE, what did it?
-
Figuring out what my own damn IP was! yea, I feel dumb ;D
-
In norton:
select: personal firewall / configure
Advanced / general
Add/ permit / next
Connections from other computers / next
any computer/next
tcp / only ports from selcted range/ add
port range / start 6881 end 6999 / next
next
make up a name / next
select locations/ next
finish
make sure the rule is at the top of the list of other rules already there.

Is there a way to know for sure whether you are firewalled or not?
-
the only problem i can see with my router is that i can't do file transfers in AIM
-

On bt.etree, I you can see part of your ip address in the peer details list. It will show your port number in parens if you are firewalled. Plus, the port will not be in the right range if you are fw. Your addy shows up in red numbers.
Onother thing to look out for is the windoz software firewall. If that is enabled, the hardware forwarding is only half the work.
-
Please forgive my stupidness...
Right now I'm trying to get:
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=6913
I have the DI-604 firewall and I think I have it set-up right.
But, it always takes a long time to BT shows.
What am I looking for at bt.etree?
-

you can open up a port on AOL to do this.
My IM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences > File Transfer
Then enter the port you wish to use and make sure its opened on your router.
-
oh, and try port 5190
-
this page may be helpful to all those trying to get around their firewalls:

What am I looking for at bt.etree?
Under "Peers" on that link you can click [see full list] and you should notice your ip addy there with some 'xxx' marks to hide your final ip numbers. The port number is shown there too and if there are parenthesis around it you are firewalled. On the home page there are some instructions for that. http://bt.etree.org/index.php We'll get you flowing.
-
Yeah, it looks like I am firewalled...
-
Log into your firewall and take a picture or something like that. Do you have paint shop? I'll start looking up windows firewall because I'm rusty with that.
-
It looks like my DI-604 can only forward 1 port at a time.
Does that mean I'm screwed for BT?
-
That doesn't sound right. That's the main job of the router, it blocks crap it lets you control ports. I'll look for the manual.
Meanwhile, do you have windows XP? Check for software firewall: start->control_panel, double-click "local area connection" Advanced Tab, is there some Protect blah blah checked?
Edit: I found the manual, no need to take a picture, stand by....
Edit again: There looks to be a place where you can specify a range of ports. I downaded a manual from here http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=62&pv=16
In the configuration software, hit the "advanced" tab and the "Virtual Server" button. In there, create a new service and specify a range of ports using the hyphen to join them. I'ts on page 23 and 24 of the manual. I see you live in Colorado, you can call me if you like in the springs, 719-520-9283.
Edit again fat figered the number fixed now.
