First off, I want to thank all that responded with such valuable info on my last post. Due to the overwhelming response, I am going with the masses, as I have decided to purchase the Edirol UA-5. Now, my next concern is powering this sucker. I'm a little foggy on whether the usb will power this thing or not. Anyone know....or do I have to supply a portable 9v DC source rated at 450mA? I have looked around all sorts of forums (ie Oade bros, Dat-Heads, etree, this one) and have not been able to find one single DIY setup. I don't want to, nor can I afford to pay oade for their power supply at $150 bucks. I do plan on purchasing one of the N-Charge laptop batteries but I don't know if it will be enough to power both the laptop and the UA-5. Would that work since it's usb? Thanks

It will not power via the USB. You can build a battery pack from RC car batteries for around $70, I think there's a DIY write up in the FAQ forum. Great stuff. Not too hard to build either, I made mine in about an hour last year. Completely rechargable, and holds a charge for the better part of ten hours of full use w/ phantom. Sweet, sweet deal. I'll see if I can dig up a link for you on the DIY stuff.

That project is a little out of date in one way. Most people use a NiMh 3000 mAh pack that goes for 5-6 hours. It's from batteryspace.com - the link is all over this board. No need for two little NiCad packs and hot swapping.

hot swapping still comes into play if yer doing a festie or something where you need power as long as possible.... yer right tho, why waste the money on the 1mAh packs when the 3mAh and charger is soooo cheap?

I made the 2 battery option and i run them both at the same time, havent had any problems. I think the dual wired creaes equal pull so why not just hook them both up at the same time?

Wire it in series, and should it not drain power from both batteries equally? I've not had problems in unit or battery yet running that combo.

if your gonna run em at the same time, make sure they are the same mah rating

if you got two 9.6V(9-11v) 3000mAh batteries:
wire in series and you will get 18-22V 3000mah
wire in parallel and you will get 9-11V 6000mah
i truely believe that you have them wired in parallel and not series.
but i *could* be wrong.........

wouldnt that drain both batterys equally, then when the smaller mah battery got low/dead, the higher mah battery would use its juice trying to charge the dead/low battery?

exactly. if both batteries are the same mAh then they discharge equally.
