Sometimes i feel like my head is going to explode...so many choices! I read up on the other thread regarding bit perfect soundcards and saw the aopen card get mentioned: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=29-117-107&catalog=57&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1§ion=3
Will this sucker handle DAT AND MD conversions via the digital realm? I have a Sony MZR50 portable unit that has a line out (i'm assuming its optical).
-
no sony portable has an optical out, it only has line in optical.
-
no sony portables have digial line outs, you ahve to get a home deck too get an optical line out, the line out on the mzr50 is analog
-
not entirely true. but might as well be. i believe one of the first generation ones was equipped with an optical out well that and crappy first gen atrac compression.
-
sony m-z1 was the model

Ah yes, it wouldnt matter what Atrac it used for recording, any MD unit can playback Type R recordings.
By the way, i'm currently looking at the MiaMIDI card on sonicsense, looks like it'll do the job.

yep, that card will definitely work. go for it

To get an MZ-1 strictly for transferring purposes, is basically useless in my opinion. Even if you find a mint one on ebay, you'll still end up paying about the same as you would for a big home deck that is more recent. Also the MZ-1 had recording time of 60 minutes on rechargeable battery that was specific to the recorder - pretty much useless in the field.
Some other MD portables that had optical out, were the Sharp MD-M11 and MD-M25, and I think Aiwa made one too. They all had longer battery lives than the MZ-1 but are probably much more rare.
-
yeah, but you can do digital patching with MD! Think of the possibilities :D

Thanks to you for mentioning in another soundcard thread ;D

I have a Hoontech DSP24v that was a bout $150 a couple of years ago. It's a "Pro" level card that doesn't resample, supports up to 24/96 andf has both optical and coaxial S/PDIF i/o. A great value IMO. CHeck it out if you haven't already gotten something else.
