yard sale advice
« on: January 09, 2004, 05:27:49 PM »
Hey now Im pretty new to the site and taping in general, so I hope you folks don't mind a few questions. I have a D8 & Oade cable and have been patching since the summer on various rigs.

Ive recently gotten a new job and want to piece together a rig. I have searched the forums and read the recent other newbie threads.

Basically Im looking to get mics/pre together in the range of 900 or so. From reading other posts and listening to many sources I think I want to look in the AKG family or Audio Techna for mics.
I also am looking for used gear here in the yard sale.

I have no clue what to do for pre/ad phantom power so Id appreciate any tips.

Im asking the experts, you guys, and have tried to put as much info as I can in my post for what Im looking to do.

Oh lastly,
I plan to tape "Official" sections like Phish and sometimes bars or clubs, something versatile.

Id appreciate any tips, esp on power supply and a/d.
Again Id like to go under 999 and in the used category.

Thanks for your time.
I have enjoyed the other threads and hope to hear some tips!

Peace,
Kevin

Regardless of all you TSers who will moan about the "fluffing", I still think the Oade digi-mod UA5 is flat-out the best bang for your buck in pre/ADC.  Build your own battery pack inexpensively and easily and you're all set.  ~$400.

That'll leave you around $600 for mics.  Some options:

AKG 39x
AKG 48x (a bit of a stretch)
ADK TLs
MG 300s

I'm sure there are others...

i'd suggest getting a set of akg393s and a warm mod ua-5 and then adding a set of cardiod caps in the spring when the outdoor season starts up.  i think the 391(3) > wmod ua-5 is probably the best value for under $1000.

there's a set of 393's in the yard sale now for $425

with the $400 w-mod ua5 (do the digimod yourself) that'll leave you almost $200 for all the other crap (stands, clamps, shocks, cables, tapes, bag....)

I'd be glad to send you a tape made with the warm mod UA-5 and some AKG 393s to help you make a decision.  Hit me up on PM if you want it.

Actually I have been eyeing those 393 in the yard sale,
Ive patched out of a similiar setup with a UA5..

Im still a bit confused on the UA5, I would buy it from Oade new? Not sure if doing anything myself to a unit would be wise. Ive dealt with Oade before & I like their service.

Thanks for the tips so far, it's greatly appreciated!
Any suggestions for "all the other stuff" would be great too, esp power supplies.

peace,
Kevin

If you decide on the UA5, it needs a modification that will allow you to use it in the field (right now it requires USB for power or something...)

You can do this mod yourself for free, and save yourself a bunch of money...

However, if you buy it from OADE, they will do the mic pre-amp mods for you in the future (like the warm-mod).

They DO NOT mod UA5s bought elsewhere, only their own UA5s...

If you think you will want to Warm or Pres MOD your UA5 in the future, go with OADE...

what twatts said.  If you get the ua-5, get it from Oade WITH the PREAMP mod (whichever you choose) and you can save yourself $100 by doing the digimod (allows you to use the digital coax to your DAT) yourself
