Using stand from balcony rail?
« on: June 14, 2009, 10:39:53 AM »
I'm making not-quite my maiden voyage with a stand hopefully tonight - it's been 10 years and I never have had the chance to use stands consistently.  This will be my first time using that type of setup from the balcony rail of the venue.  What are the basic tips/tricks/etiquette considerations of doing that?  I assume, for example, that the right thing to do is tape the stand to the rail using some kind of heavy-duty tape, rather than spreading the legs out and taking up more space on the balcony.  Is there a particular kind of tape that's good for this purpose?

My stand is one of those Bogen knockoff stands, so basically a light-stand type of design that telescopes.

if you have a "C" clamp and the balcony has a rail... use that
if you tape your stand to the rail use Gaffer's tape because it doesn't leave residue like Duct tape

sometimes if there's enough tapers you can set up a stand with the legs spread
and have several tapers clamp onto one stand to conserve space
just have tapers put their gear in the seats and on the floor on both sides of the stand
that way other attendees (non tapers) won't try to walk thru the area

Good Luck Tonite!

Try not to block anyones view...typically you would just clamp onto the rail instead of using a stand. Maybe take your mounting bar off of the stand and just velcro or gaffer tape it right to the rail.
