Omnis outdoors, especialy spaced or using a jeklin disk, will get some great results.

The diaphragm size of the mic doesn't matter.

There is no one fool proof mic for any setting or situation.  Cards run in a wide XY will also get good results....just try different things and see what ya like!

you're still here?

and Brian is dead on, it doesn't matter if it's LD's or SD's...

I find omni caps to sound completely natural, they work best outdoors because of the lack of reflections off of surfaces (like walls and ceilings). Omni's are my favorite sounding "pattern" and I've started trying them indoors too in good sounding venues when I'm in a very good spot. Go seek out some omni tapes if you haven't listened to many before...

I have found wider patterns to extremely band/genre dependent.  Since omni are the most natural sounding pattern, you're going to get what you are hearing.  If its heavy on the bass, than that's what you are going to get.

Anybody have any thoughts on flying omni's higher than other patterns to decrease bass response?

hmmmmm interesting thought William.

Omni's don't suffer from proximity effect though like directional mics... my guess is that it wouldn't make as big a difference as with directional mics. But that's just a guess...

I suppose I am considering crowd reflection dampening HF pickup...  you know, the difference in sound when you bend down at a show and tie your shoes or something
