What would you run DIN or NOS?
« on: March 26, 2004, 05:39:49 PM »
Tonight I'll be taping in a pretty small venue and i'll be pretty DFC and ~20 feet from the source. I have only been running XY since I got the new mics, so am out to experiment with some different configs (that's half the fun)...

I'm contemplating DIN or NOS for tonight. I'm leaning towards DIN because being that close to the source, I would think the 30cm spacing of NOS will be too wide of a stereo image...

what are your thoughts?  oh, and i'll be running cards.

Cheers,
Travis

that close NOS will leave you a hole in the middle... I'd run DIN out of the 2 but xy/100* might sound nice.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

What mics?

If the room sounds reasonably good, I'd run ORTF.  Second choice would be DIN.  Third XY with a wide angle (100º or 110º).

depend on what your runnin i think.. i havn't had good luck with ortf.  i've fell in love with DIN, and if its low end heavy, XY.  I have found ortf to be more bottom heavy with my 391's, so if you want more, i'd try it, but other than that i'd run DIN. good luck, peace,

well, I'll add to that...
sc-t + DIN = sweet tapes

I ended up going with DIN because when i looked at where my mics would be pointing if they were ORTF it just seemed like a bad ieda. I was too close to the source to run 110*.

By far my best pull yet, mind you a little less bass than i would have preferred. But these mics seem fairly bright, and i really like the sound for now... It wasn't going to be any better had i done XY. Also, the band had some good stereo effects that were picked up nicely with the wider image of DIN comp. to XY

good to hear it came out nice...DIN is one of my fav configs, get good stereo seperation, but still maintain a nice tight soundstage

i ran something weird that sounded pretty good, i spaced the mics not too much at all, the caps were about 3-4inches apart, and at 90* kinda like a wide xy or smaller DIN!!!

nick sullivan and i were about 20ft from stage DFC also, so i would recomend that, more spacing than xy and not as much chatter as DIN!!!
