I'm in need of a power source for my AKG 393s. I'm debating to buy the Denecke PS2. Any opinions or experience in using them with the AKG line? Thanks in advance for the help.

the mv100 is a preamp that also provides phanton power.

the ps2 only supplies phantom power.

what are you running behing the mv100/ps2?

Sorry about the quick change of question. I would be running a Sony D100.

I had a UA5 p-mod, but a drunk girl spilled a pint of beer all over my stuff. (It was 3 days old.) I have to quickly change to something that will get me by for a Damien Rice show coming up in April.

then I think the mv100 would be preffered. the preamp in the mv100 is better than the one in the d100.

i have the MV-100, and like it, but the gain is stepped at 20-40-60 dB and running into a d100 that is sometimes too hot with my Oktavas, which put out a weaker signal than the 390s. you cannot run the d100 under 4 on the input dial or it will brickwall.

if you do choose to get an MV-100 definitely pick up a pair of attenuators!

i like the preamp, sounds better than PS2 - LT's did to my ears, and it's built very solid, can run for 7-8 hours on 2 9V's putting out a full 48V, i imagine it will run much longer at the voltage 390s require...

you should be able to run line-in and not brickwall.

i have a set of Audio technica attenuators just sitting around if you wanted them for a good price and +T for the beer spillage, drunk wooks are horrible

You mean that if the d100/m1 is run below a certain point it will brickwall?

i've got about 15 brickwalled tapes from running line-in below 4 that will disprove that Tim! I had read that before, and had no fear, and i've got the shitty tapes to prove it's not true!

I still think you might be right Tim. I'm not sure you will brickwall the D100 on line in, but maybe.

More than likely the issue Kyle is having is with the MV100. I had one for awhile and ran it with km184s that are pretty hot and had no -10db pad. And I got a number of boughts of brickwalling before I figured out the problem. The MV100 can take in a very hot signal on its input, but not on its output after the minimum +20db gain boost. If you dig around the Oade archives, you can find my much more detailed post on this subject, along with all the specifications for the MV100.

I finally went in and modified the gain structure of the MV100 so that it provided less gain, and all the problems went away.

Oh, by the way, at the time I was having the brickwalling problems, I was not running the MV100 into a D100, but into either an Apogee AD500e or line-in to an Aiwa HDX3000 dat (same as the Marantz pmd700).

Agreed. No reason to not run an M1/D100 (or D8 or SBM1) at or near 10 as long as you have a continuously variable preamp that will allow for it.

i had brickwall issues running an analog patch out of a D8 too (the D8 was fed by a V3 and 184's) and one other time running analog out of 4022>v2>AD2K>DA-P1.

i'm almost certain the M1 will brickwall on line-in

that is very good to know re: the MV100 brickwalling, would you be interested in modding mine, Todd?

Quite possible the M1/D100 can brickwall as well, I just wanted to be sure it wasn't the MV100 as culprit.

Someone else there also did a similar mod and posted very detailed instructions on how to do it, along with a number of pictures.

oh i'm scared to mod my taping gear! too poor to replace it.
i still have some decent shure attenuators, which imo sound hundreds of times better than the oktava pads, i'll probably just use those more - only problem with those is they don't work well in my bag
