sbm-1 question...
« on: April 01, 2004, 05:39:46 PM »
i have a few different mics that i run into my m1 to record demos, and have been very happy with the results so far.  my question is, i've been offered an unmodified sbm-1 for a very reasonable price and am curious as to what degree this will enhance the sound (if at all).

any advice welcome and appreciated.

thanks,
d

The a/d in the M1 is very similiar (the same?) as the a/d in the sbm-1. unmodded I think you're money could be better spent elsewhere.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

The mic preamp in the M1 is the same as in the SBM1.  The A/D of the sbm1 is different than the M1, with the SBM1 using Sony's proprietary dither routine.  But many folks find the A/D sections to sound very similar, myself included.
Mics: Microtech Gefell m20/m21 (nbob/pfa actives), Line Audio CM3, Church CA-11 cards
Preamp:  none <sniff>
Recorders:  Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sony PCM-M10, Zoom H4nPro
