Shrink wrapping gear..... V3 or SLA packs?
« on: May 11, 2004, 09:46:08 AM »
I've heard of people "shrink-wrapping" their homemade SLA battery packs...and was thinking of doing the same to my V3.   Just shrink-wrapping the milled metal casing....I am basically just wanting to protect my gear against my abuse.

Here are my questions:

1.   Material- any ideas of where to buy (lowes, home depot?) and how heavy would you use?

2.  Heat:   I don't think there would be any additional heat built up with this stuff.  thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

The V3 and SLAs are built like tanks.  Don't sweat the piddly cosmetic dings - they build character.   :P

yea, wrap the V3 in shrink wrap, then plug in a 12 volt in the hot summer taping sun.....then you will be peeling melted shrink wrap off the V3 ;D

I don't mean to be, but I am VERY hard on my gear.   Anything I can do to protect it...I feel like I should.   I also lend it out a bunch to people looking to learn.

I'm just worried that when I go to sell it (at some point ;-) more than likely) someone will look at the thing and it will look like it's taped a few 100 shows.

I was just talking about using a thick plastic shrink wrap which covers the silver metal casing....not enclosing the thing so I can run underwater or anything. ;D  Besides....it's a 6V ;D

If you really wanna protect it, consider getting a nice sturdy bag, building a cage, securing the V3 solidly within the cage, and setting up so the only thing you have to do pre/post show is plug in the power (not on the back of the unit, obviously), and turn on the power.

Multiple levels of protection / prevention:

Prevention

[1] minimal moving stuff around in the bag pre/post show
[2] you can lend out the whole setup so people don't bang it up

Protection

[3] bag offers protection
[4] cage offers protection

Very helpfull info guys...much appreciated.    Yes, I was talking about using a heat gun to shrink wrap a cover.  I've seen it on battery pack and it seems to work really well.   It's heavy enough that it doesn't permantley attach to the metal and so you can cut it off with a knife if it doesn't work.

The one drawback to the cage (do you get it at Target?) is for stealthing.   I do like to travel as light as possible also.  I might give this a shot though.  I know I've seen plenty of pictures of your set ups.

Have any of you custom cut some foam to put around/behind the V3?  that is a thought....I think this is what Boswell is using.

you could always wrap it around a few times with saran wrap.  personally, i'd leave it the way it is
we all live downstream.
