Preamp for use with AT831 stealth
« on: October 01, 2004, 04:46:39 AM »
I am looking for a preamp that has visual levels and can be used to stealth with an MD or HDD recorder with no levels.

What options do i have except the Lunatec V3 and the Premix?? I use Audio Techinica 831 mics (cards capsule) and OKMIIRS (as reserve)
Recorders: Zoom F3; SD MixPre 3 II; Sony A10; Edirol R44; Sony M10; Sony WM-D6; iRiver IHP-120; Sharp MD-MT20; Sharp MD-MT190
Microphones: Schoeps MK41; Nevaton MC59/S (cards); Milab VM-44 Links (cards), AT853 7.4mod (cards); AT831 (cards); Nakamichi CM300 (all CP's); Soundman OKM II Rock Studios
Preamps: Beyerdynamic MV100; JK Laboratories DVC-X-17b; Naiant IPA; Nakamichi MX-100 modded for 9v battery use ; Baby Nbox

Can't think of one. Don't you get quite low levels going line-in on a minidisc anyway?
UK based taper: MK4>Nbox Platinum>PCM-M10
AT853C>CA9200 / PIPsqueak>Tascam DR-2D

Besides a MIXPRE and V3, I can think of plenty.

MP-2, FP-24, MV-100, V2, Sonosax SX-M2, PSP-2, PSP-3, UA-5, GMIC-20.  But the question still stands, what good is a preamp with lights while stealthing?

Correct me if i am wrong, but if i would use a preamp, i dont have to set the levels on an MD/DAT/HD, right?

The levels have light, so that's better than using an md and a electric small light.

well if you use an a/d you dont need to set levels on your dat, but just a pre you still need to be carefull of brickwalling your dat deck

I take it you've never seen a V3 and the level meters ("lights") in person. If you tried to stealth one with the levels exposed, you would not be very successful.

my point is that a pure preamp won't tell you where you are hitting on your recorder.  Thus, you can have a preamp with all the lights you want but you can still be way off the mark, assuming the mark you want to hit is 0dB

I like -4db and waiting for somebody to scream it up to the brickwall.

lmao, nothing worse than having to set levels in case of that WOOOO from the guy standing next to you.

Too bad the levels from a MD tend to be difficult to read, i use a dat and check levels a few times every couple of songs to make sure its not going over.
