new jb3 rival (edit: mp3 only) :(
« on: October 21, 2004, 03:16:55 PM »
saw this at Oade boards.

Here's the DMC Xclef 500:

http://www.digmind.com/store/index_500.html

mini-optical input, supports wav, 0-100 gig HD option, and usb 2.0 transfer

and the DMC 800:

http://www.digmind.com/store/index_800.html

same features but 20-40 HD option, much smaller (2.6" x 3.9" x .86") smaller than an ipod.

now the question is bit accuracy....

Does it support recording in .wav format?  I am only seeing that it will play .wav's for "audiophiles"

price looks really good though.

Here's what it says about recording:
"Yes, MP3 encoding at selectable quality (32kbit/s - 320 kbit/s). Dual analog/digital input S/PDIF (IEC958) port (optical mini plug)"

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

DOH!!!!

found this in the faq:

"The DMC players are capable of recording encoded MP3 files only. High-quality recordings are easily achieved by setting the encoding bitrate to 320 kb/s."

bullshit...

"and an analog/optical line-in so you can digitally record from any source at up to 320 kb/s."

Maybe my math is off, but isn't this below what is necessary for 16bit/44.1k recording (705.6 kb/s)?

Sent them an email asking if they could release firmware to allow wav recording. Probably nothing will happen, but we'll see.

Edit: Got a response back stating there were no plans to support wav recording

I saw it today when Slashdot had an iPod killer story.

They now have a 'Will it record to WAV' entry on their FAQ page. (answer: no)

It seems to me that recording to WAV would be easier than MP3...oh well...

There is only 1 rival to the JB3 as far as wav recording goes: Neuros.
