The cheapest Hi-MD model I've seen is the MZ-NH700. It's a discontinued model , but NEW and in the unopened original box. New MZ-NH700s appear regularly appears on eBay. Auctions end with typical winning bids around $120, shipping included.
So far as I can tell, the preamp and A/D circuit in the NH700 is the same as in all other Hi-MD machines. Sony certainly doesn't claim that its more expensive models sound any different.

Yep. That is an excellent buy. This unit (like the '800) has mic, line (and optical) inputs, and runs of a single AA battery! Perfect general purpose machine, or a backup if you need a board patch, etc. I've seen it for around $150USD on minidisc-canada.com on closeout, but their stock varies. It is not there now.
