I've looked all over the FAQs and elsewhere, have decided to give up and ask the wonderful TS Iriver community for some help.

Everything went well with the battery switch on my 140, but when I went to power on I got this message: ATA error: -11 and something about plugging a USB cable and hitting a button. I did that, computer recognizes the drive, files are all there. But when I unplug the cable, the Iriver stays in USB bootloader mode. When I reset, it went to the Iriver firmware, and a message popped up about checking the HDD connection. I did a checkdisk in Windows and everything's fine. I'm suspecting Rockbox is having a problem booting up somewhere.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

It's a good idea to start troubleshooting at the thread above. Won't take you more than 15 minutes.

But the key here is your error number: -11.
This means that the connection to the daughter board is loose (typically from battery replacement).
You can try to apply pressure, de-oxidize the connectors, or worst case resolder them. It's all explained here:

why? It could just be a bad contact or worst a broken soldering. If it's the latter and you're no good with a soldering iron, find somebody who does ;)

I took it all apart, put it back together real carefully, trying to make sure that connection was pretty good. Fired it up before I put the cover back on, and found at one point that it was going back and forth between usb connected and disconnected, so it definitely seems like a bad connection. At one point, it came on just fine, went right to rockbox, but after I put the covers back on, back to the error message...frustrating. Also, at one point, I got an ATA -80 message, that was scary, but I can't find any info on that.

I am definitely no good with the soldering, so I'll look around for someone to help me out. In the meantime, I guess I'll get the backup 340 rockboxed and ready to go (hopefully!) Or maybe start getting more serious about the R-44 I've been wanting :)

Thanks for all the help!

I replaced my battery yesterday and got the ATA- 11 error message and something about plugging in a USB cable. Plugging in the USB cable did nothing. I reset the unit using a paper clip in the bottom and all is fine now. Hope this works for others having this problem.
