Dpa 4022> TINYBOX
« on: May 23, 2011, 11:49:37 AM »
So,I have some dpa4022's that I want to try and stealth with. But the Tinybox is a 9v source. My Nevetons are out of commission at the moment, and had a stealth only show coming up. I still have my Sonics, but out of curiosity, I tried the 4022's w/ the Tinybox, and it powered up, I had moving levels on my R-09hr. So I laid them next to my home speaker and recorded for a couple minutes loudly, then played back on the computer... PERFECT!

That night, I brought them to the show and taped. Although the recording itself isnt that good (Was WAY off axis from the speakers and on the side.. The actual recording  (About 2 hrs, loud rock show) was fine.. So in my unprofessional opinion, the dpa's work fine with Tinybox's voltage. When Naiant comes out w/ a 48v version,I think Iwill still get one, but.... This is another small capsule> Tinybox> deck combo with a nice small footprint..

YMMV,

The 4022's are pre-polorized (electret) condensers, as are AT853's, Nak300's, Earthworks, and many other mics.  The power for most electrets is to bias the the mic preamp circuitry, not to polarize the capsule, so it makes sense that it could work. Whenever I hear someone say "electrets suck", I point to DPA's and Earthworks to demonstrate that's not always true.

How well do 4022's perform with 9V?  I can't begin to guess.   I have some 2 wire AT853's, which are well known to brickwall at a loud show.  One time at a typically loud show (Trey) I used a 12V battery box for one set, which gives just enough headroom to avoid brickwalling.  For the next set I used a preamp with 8 - 9 volts and it did brickwall a little, it was barely audible, but it showed up clearly when looking at the waveform in Audacity.  So in my case that extra voltage helps the headroom enough to matter.  Is that the same with the 4022's?  I have no idea.  Look at the wave form in Audacity or whatever, and see if it looks limited on the peaks.  If it does, then 9V isn't quite enough.  If it looks fine, than probably it is fine.

I wish I recorded a band at a place that I was in the proper place. It was reserved seating and we had these awesome balcony seats great for the visual, but on the outside of speakers pointed inward. so it sounds like it sounded at the seats, hollow, but looking at the wavforms(?) everything is clean peaks arent distorted, and the volume was loud, our off axis ruined it. So I will give it a thumbs up.. YAY.. Now what is a good way to wear the mics? They're bigger than any other stealthy mic I've used.. PM's if any good solutions..
