level setting Q
« on: June 07, 2004, 09:05:38 PM »
Can you set the level on the JB3 (gain) and does it effect the levels even when your recording via the optical in? It seems that my levels are peaking on my JB3 but the light on my UA5 isn't dancing like I want it to. I know that its -3 adn that it should be lit on and off to get it close to 0 but it seems that my JB3 is peaking out before that. Also, if I should set it, at what? Thanks

Sterling

The JB3 levels are not so accurate.  You have NO gain control when using optical in, analog line in give you +- 12db

The Peak level light on the UA5 is also not very scientific either.  I hate to fluff the SVU-1 or an external meter but I think that may be your best bet unless you set your levels conservative and add gain in post processing.

what kind of external meter could you use?
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

will, if you search for svu-1 there is a thread or two detailing the calibration of the units.
studio projects c4 > edirol ua-5 [digi mod] > Microtrack II

laying around: sp cmc-4, power supply and jb3

i don't have links, they are at some local aud/vid stores

i am still confussed on what calibrating it does though
because
the levels will apear different based on haw far away your mics are from the sound source
so if i use pink/white noise and set it at 0db for example
then i move the mics farther away from the speaker the level will drop down and i will have to adjust the preamp to get it at 0db again
so i don't see how or why it would be any different different then just setting them at the show based on the volume of where your seats are
