DMIC-20 help
« on: March 16, 2004, 01:17:19 PM »
hey all, got my dmic-20 from stejampzy last weekend and i ran it for the first time at signal path on saturday night.  i was on the stage lip at cervantes, and there was somewhat of a sound hole where i was, not too bad, but the levels on the tapes were quite low.  i had the dmic opened all the way up, all the switches down (in the on position) and the todd-mod knobs turned all the way up, still i don't think i hit over -6 db the whole night.
now, when i was running my usbpre, i never had to turn the knob past about 11:00 so i still had plenty of gain left to apply if needed.  i'm wondering if anyone has any advice for me, can relate from personal experience running the dmic-20 with oktavas, or just kind words ;)
thanks!

Josh, I had the DAP1 opened up the whole way and probably never hit over -5db the whole night... I think that show was a bit of an annomaly.

I remember running that thing around -35, -30 on the dip switches.

 ;D

tim, seems REALLY odd, that thing usually ALWAYS had nice gain, has he ever ran it w/ the oktava's before??maybe they just dont have a sensitive pickup??

not sure if the octavas have a really low ouput but that does seem exceptionally low especially for onstage.  i never used more than 3 dip switches of gain when i used it with the 391s.

the oktavas seem to have pretty high output, which is why i'm confused also.  i don't have an exceptionally loud playback system either so i can't really test much at home...i did a test run before the show and the levels were pretty low at home also but i attributed it to my sound system.
also...why/how is -60 higher gain than -20???  what is up with the dip switches?

the dip switches suck ass. I didn't know about them until I got the thing, and cursed Nutter's name for not mentioning that *detail*. Still, you really only ever run the last few switches, and I never once clipped a tape. It's kinda nice to set and forget. I'd bet that it just wasn't all that loud onstage, remember the music isn't amplified there, your'e really taping acoustic. Test at home, I bet you'll get levels that are fine in front of the speakers.

simp's has some nice 10db nobs on it... much better than just the dip switches.

Simp,

I ran the d-mic>oktava combo for a while, you should always be in the 30-45 range. In fact I dont think I EVER had to adjust the gain on it once I got it set.  I cant remember what the setting was. Just 3 or 4 switches from the right if your looking at the unit.

Had to be a strange phenomenon.

oh yeah +T to everybody

Just remember stage-lip/on-stage is probably a monitor recording not from the general speakers. I'm sure the levels are much lower on-stage... otherwise the musicians would go deaf even faster. ;)
