I'm searching for a decent mic for my canon camcorder with mic-in... the internal mics suck and brickwall even at "quiet" rock/metal shows. The problem is that is has no accessory shoe and my usual route (separate audio recording dpa4061>BB>H120) is becoming too stressful to me when stealthing. I don't need hi definition sound (which isn't possible anyway with this cam > agc), I just want a mic that can handle higher spls so I can actually hear and not only see what's going on on my tapes ^^
If anybody has a solution... please, post ;D

a friend of mine uses this one and the quality is VERY good
ppl never believe when he says that its only an external sony mic ;D
EDIT: he only films metal shows (wich are pretty loud).. so this might work for you 8)

Thanks but that doesn't really help me, instead of buying a sony mic I could also hook my DPAs up to the cam.
I guess I didn't say clearly enough what I want... I'm searching for a solution to mount a better mic TO my camera (that's why I mentioned the missing accessory shoe). There are various reasons why I don't want to use my dpas, one of them being that I still want to be able to run them separate. They'd further be a waste on this camera ^^
I can imagine to get a small powered mic (cam has no plugin power) that I can duct-tape onto the cam, something like that:

@danzz: where/how does he mount the mic? or is he just holding it in his hand?

i cant find any pics right now (i used to have them somewhere).. but he used to put the mic on the top of it (like your pic) and just use some tape wrap to fix it in the camera body.. simple as that

interesting, so my idea wasn't that far from reality... but I just checked the size of the mic and I guess it's no option for me :/

i just talked with another friend of mine.. that used to film with his Sony TVR-22E and external mic
he said he got pretty nice results with the microtracker mic
its small enough, and he said he fixed it at the right side of the cam, and not at the top of it

My cam has no plugin power so I'd need an additional battery box... but anyway, just 2 more posts and I can give you a T+ for helping :)
I just found a mic (http://dvcreators.net/discuss/showthread.php?t=18447) that looks like a good choice, unfortunately it has a shoemount which I don't need and it's not available yet.

maybe you could just use it clipped to you and not fixed at the cam ::)

I stumbled across that mic yesterday... it's more or less an upgrade to the ms907, and I'd take it instantly if it were half the size :'(
Clipping to me is exactly the problem. I'd like to mount the mic to the cam so can e.g. put it onto a tripod and not having to stand beside the whole time.
I've been searching the net for three days now and couldn't find any good solution either. Seems like I'll have to wait for the new sennheiser or construct something by myself.

Wiesel: I have a MVX460 and I duck tape my Sony 907 on top just like you showed with your pics. It works great. A youtube clip were I was right in fornt of the band and the speakers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edJR-7hqZgU
If you don't mind I'll sneak in a question maybe you or someone else can answer: Right now I have the standard battery(BP-208) that I got with the camera, is there any other battery with longer life? BP-208 only lasts for 75 minutes or so...

cool, the clip sounds pretty good. Can you still change tapes with the mic taped on top?
Unfortunately there's no battery with longer life. The best battery you can get is the original bp-208 from canon (mine lasts about 100 minutes). I bought a few different 3rd party batteries and no one lasts that long like the original one, the worst one just lasts for about 35 - 40 minutes. I recently purchased another one from "itrimming" on ebay, that's the best replica I have (lasts 90 minutes) and the cheapest too.

Yeah, just don't tape over the opening switch and you should be fine.
No wonder I couldn't find any then... I'll have to pick up one or two new batteries then.

A little update for those who might get into the same situation one day... I couldn't find a small and decent mic for the cam so I built my own one, as small as it can get but since the cam provides no plug-in power I had to attach a 9V battery. The battery, which is about 4 times bigger than the actual mic makes the whole thing so big that it can't be mounted anywhere on the cam. If you tape it to the top you either can't open the lcd or the tape drive. That said, I decided to continue using my audio rig and record the audio separately.
