MiniMe questions
« on: August 10, 2005, 08:26:47 AM »
Hey all..
i've got a few questions.  I've run one of these in living room tests..but not in the real world.

1. the 6v-12v rating...does that mean anything in between will work?  or one or the other w/a jumper setting internaly?
2. what is the general consenses as what mics sound best w/this box?  that one is just a curiosity for me.  I want to find some sources
and do some listening.

I've always found the Mme to be a little "bloated" sounding.  which I like.  Its got presence..and combined w/the classic apogee detail...I find it pleasing.
some of the best stuff i've heard out of it have been km150>mm3 pairings.

My current Peluso's have a wonderful bottom end..which might be too much when paired with the Mme.  I have a bug in my but for an SKM 140 kit....which might also be a bit dark for the Mme.  any comments on the 140 sound through one?
I used to run 140>V3 and all I heard was the mics.  which was excellent.
but i'm not in the V3 market right now...., so we'll see.

I'm almost leaning towards 480's as well.  can't go wrong with them..and they might mate nice with the Apogee preamp section.

I have heard  many people say that MG200/210 sounds excellent with the MMe.

Say that the mme really brings out the full capabilities of those mics.

maybe the 210, but not the 200.
the 200s have a nice fat bottom end as it is...with the MiniMe it sounds loose down there and theres a added brittleness to the highs.
put a nice transparent pre in front of the MiniMe and you have a very nice(though very heavy) rig!

yea, i know.  I think I can find synergy between the Mme front end and "somekind" of mic.
:)
210s could be a possibility.  I think i'll actualy be able to run a pair for the moe/abb run at greatwoods next week.

Rusty (aka "rustoleum") runs AKG 481 > MiniMe > laptop.  I've heard of couple of his phish tapes from last summer, which sound nice.  I'm sure he could set you up with some tapes and tell you his thoughts, send him a PM.

I think my favorite MiniMe tape, though, is a Leo Kottke / Mike Gordon tape from the 9:30 Club in DC on 11/10/02.

Neumann TLM 170 subcards > MiniMe...  it's got a wonderful, clear sound to it with an awesome soundstage.

I've run the 140's w/ the V3 and the MME (w/ and w/o the 148) and both sound good but I prefer the MME.  More presence is a good description.

I LOVE  my 481s -> MiniMe  (thanks for the props, Jason!).  Need to get me some new caps one of these days, but I don't see myself changing either of those pieces of gear any time soon.  Also - the bass is much tighter at 24 bit compared to 16 bit with the MiniMe... that bloated sound you hear is much less pronounced at 24bit, but still... I may end up putting a preamp in front of it someday to tighten it up a little more.

I'm happy to provide some samples.  There's also some recent stuff I've taped on the archive (SCI, Keller and Umph from 7/23) in 16bit form or I can provide some 24bit masters (24bit Trey from Boston is on bt.etree.org but crawling really slow).

6v-12v... yes... anything in between is fine and there are no jumpers to set.  I run 9.6v RC packs.

Rusty

Edit:  Archive shows... thanks to the three that uploaded these from the torrents!

SCI from 7/23:   http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=27626
Keller:  http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=27715
Umph: http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=27596

Just noticed Carl's SCI is up there, too... a good comparison opportunity.

Theoretically, a 9.6v 5.4 aH battery will go for about 9 hours.

(9.6v/5.5 w)  * 5.4 = 9.425 hours

(5.5 watts = draw of the MME if memory serves me correctly)

I run 9.6v 1.8 aH batteries which in theory will last for about 3 hours each:

9.6/5.5 * 1.8 = 3.14 hours

In reality that's about right... I ran some testing when I first bought it in 2003 and I would get just about 3 hours out of each battery.   In the field I run two 1.8s in parallel and let it go for 5 hours before switching to another pair.

Rusty

edit: no worries about the foot... don't even remember it myself.

1) about 7 hours runtime, phantom on, off 7.2 ah 6v. about 15 hours on a 12v, no kidding. I tested.

2) no mics sound real good straight into that thing, imo. The high end is a little muted, the midrange sort of blended, and the lows bloated and messy. But I think that flat fairly transparent mics like 480's or dpa 40xx probably sound best...the more color, the less I think you'll like it. Imo.

But running it line in is a whole 'nother story. I really do like it about as much as a 1k when run that way.

The MBHO's sound great with it, minime gives them some bottom end while the killer MBHO's highs continue to shine. I ran it with the schoeps for a period, was pretty good, but not totally to my liking, a bit too bloated in the bottom end. I would be curious on how the TL's would sound with the minime

This is true.

Now that you mention it, I've been wanting to do some comps with my Gefells for a while.  I've never run them straight into the MME, always had the Lunatec in front.  The vast majority of the time I run the MME line-in, but there's been a few shows where I've engaged the MME pre and backed off on the 316, and there's certainly a difference.

I'm leaving for Southern California in about 2 hours, but if this is still up in a week, and there's still any interest, I can sit down and crank out some samples:  300's > 316. MME line-in, 300's > 316> MME pre engaged, 300's > MME, etc...

some of the best stuff i've heard out of it have been km150>mm3 pairings.

that was my favorite pairing, I made some pretty decent tapes with that combination
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

actually, I'll second that. A buddy ran that for awhile, and I think the real nice highs and restrained lows of the mbhos were a nice match for the mme. I think probably earthworks would match up well too.
