recording a drumline - thoughts?
« on: July 29, 2003, 06:41:07 PM »
I have the opportunity to record my old high school's drumline here in the next week or two and wanted to get yall's thoughts on setup.  This will be outdoors, most likely on the football field but we can set them up in a concrete amphitheatre thing if we want.  Although this is a marching band, they're just doing cadences so they won't be moving.  Here's how they set up:
         c  c  c
     # # # # # O
    x                  O
   x   :)       :)     O
                          O
        M M M M      O

c = cymbal
# = snare
x = tenor/quads
O= bass
M = mallet stuff
:) = where I'd like to space omni's (if I had 'em)

I have cards and hypers at my disposal and could probably get my hands on some omni's if someone wants to shoot some 62 caps my way (I'd pay shipping both ways and you'd get my guarantee).

If I can't get omni's, what should I do?  ORTF cards in the center?

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Nice.  If this comes out I would really like to get a copy.  I miss my old drumline days.

because it won't be amplified...plug mic-in!
I had to do that at the Hollywood Bowl once, just to get a decent signal

Is this the way they want to line up or that has been the best or...the way band teachers seperate instruments ??? ???

Seems to me you art going to have one channel way bass heavy.  Can you re-align them into something more even/ balanced and then run the cards DIN up about 10' pointing down alittle to align to the cymbols (as the bass will be everywhere the highs need some attention
Can you thrwo the bass in the rear (curved line not straight), then snars (curved), cymbols front and WTF is a tenor/quad drum....anyway you know where I'm going on this try to organize it for some even balance and go DIN cards.

Tenor/Quad are basically what I played.  I played quints which are quads with a high tom stuck in the middle.  Looks something like this hanging down in front of you.

O 0  O

Not sure which way you are planning on having the bass drummers turned but maybe have them face the mics rather than turned sideways(you see the drum head).  That might bring down the overwhelming bass a tad.

hey lee,
i was in the drumline in high school.  this one time in band camp (no, really, it actually happened... but without the flutes) our instructor had a quasi-professional audio guy come in and tape us.  i wasn't paying all that much attention to his setup(it was a LONG time ago), but i was on bass drum, and he put us in the middle with one of each of our two quads to the left and right and the snares and cymbals in front of us.  if memory serves, he used an XY configuration.  also, we were in our band room when he taped us, so i'm sure the shape of the room and the sound baffling helped because the recording turned out pretty good.  anyway, if you want to discuss it further, i'd be happy to help.
