Rewinding Sony d8
« on: November 29, 2004, 05:58:41 AM »
Hi Folks,

Am probably missing something really obvious here.

Recorded a show on Friday night on my Sony D8 - hooked the player up to the car
stereo and rewound the tape (or so I thought) to have a listen on the way home - it
played for about 17 seconds and then the recording stopped and the display said 'blank'
as you would expect.

I assumed that I'd bumped the stop button on the player during the recording as I
forgot to switch the hold button on.

Brought the player into work this morning and when I went to take the tape out
I noticed that it had recorded on a lot further than what I'd listened to would
suggest. Rewound it to the start and lo and behold - it had actually recorded the
entire gig. So, I was looking for one track in particular to see how it turned out,
so I fast forwarded to find it - I actually went past it so tried to rewind.

When I rewind it rewinds for about 17 seconds worth of tape and then stops
and resets the tape counter to zero. I can't rewind to the start of the tape.

I can rewind in review mode, but not high speed or normal rewind. Fast forward
seems to be unaffected.

The only thing I've done since Friday night is take the batteries out until
this morning.

Am I missing something really obvious ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

THe D-8 can be temperamental when it comes to rewinding.  Mine has done this numeraous times, even after a Sony servicing or two.  I generally do not rewind on my D-8.  I pop the tape out as ssson as the recording is finished, then take it home to rewind on a home DAT unit.
If this happens continually, you will need to have the D-8 serviced.  IT COULD just be low on batteries, in which case it would stop during most functions as well as rewind.
music IS love

When you get confused, listen to the music play!

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia
