ISO: Help with home internet connection
« on: December 20, 2008, 04:23:50 PM »
OK, we just got cable and road runner installed in the new house.  Wireless works - I'm typing on the laptop in the living room right now.  But I can't get the desktop to connect to the InterWeb???

The Desktop is etherneted into the back of the modem...  I've messed with all kind of switches and restarted everytime.  I've hit the reset on the modem...  Nothing works...

Any clues or help???  I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff, so Internet for Idiots is quite appropriate!

Thanks,

Terry

PS I'll check back here after my cousin's christmas party tonite...

What OS are you on?
What do you get if you run cmd > ipconfig?
Did you try to do an ipconfig /release + ipconfig /renew?

Is the desktop connecting to the router (ie: it gets and IP address from it?), and just not connecting to the internet, or is it not getting an IP?

You might want to check your desktops Network Interface Card settings. More than likely you'll need to set it to get it's IP automatically.

I've actually had good luck calling tech support. They can usually walk you through everything.

Modem was busted.  Time Warner replaced it and my InterWeb was working within 1 min.

Thanks!  Now I have 1 week of Torrents to catch up on!

If that's an XT (which I'd bet it is), it could be anywhere from an x86 > 286.

So, you could be incorrect
