Looks like the alesis multimix firewire can also record in multitrack.

I'm interested in user experiences.

Firewire, but MOTU traveler is very nice, and you can upgrade the preamps through black lion audio

A lot of the USB options out there are limited to 2 tracks - if you go Firewire you will have a much better selection. For USB, though, there is also the Edirol UA-101 - it has 10 channels of I/O - future expandability, mabye?

It's all about bandwidth. Even with USB 2, bandwidth is a huge problem. Of course if you go check out Tom's Hardware site you'll soon understand why, most USB 2 cards are only about 1/2 of what they are suppose to be, that and Windows had never been super speedy with either USB or FireWire (lots of overhead). If you must go with USB, then the Emagic option would be the one I would go with, although it is no longer supported on either Windows or Mac OS. I would suggest you look into purchasing a FW card and a FW device. Your options open up considerably then.

All this but it isn't clear, do you require 4 pre-amps? or simply 4 analog inputs?
