XLR to RCA?? noob sbd taper content
« on: September 01, 2010, 04:52:57 PM »
Hey all,
99% of the recording I do is from the audience, so I'm rather clueless about this. I'm gonna be running a board tape for a show this friday. The board is an Allen and Heath ML 3000 -- venue soundman informs me that there are 1/4 outs on each channel, or matrix XLR outs (I'm assuming this means all the board inputs run together??).

He also wrote this "Due to the way the console is set up, for MON from FOH, groups are not available for recording." -- I'm assuming this means it's not possible to get a separate submix put together for recording?

In any case, I'm assuming the XLRs would be the way to go? The outputs are all three-pin male, so I would need three-pin females for this, right?
I need to get from the board somehow into my male RCA > 1/8 cable, which then runs into my R-09. I hit Radioshack today, but I couldn't find anything along the lines of a direct XLR > RCA cable. Would my best bet be to just pick up a pair of XLR > 1/4 and 1/4 > RCA adapters? There are several specialty audio stores in town I'm sure I could find these at, but I need to get the equipment put together for Friday night, so ordering online isn't an option. Any recommendations as far as brands/setups to use??

You want a Female XLR to Female RCA adapter like this....

Guitar Center or any other Musical Instrument store should have them.

Depending on how long your RCA > Mini cable is and if you can leave your recorder near the board, you may not even need another cable.

Yeah, I will definitely be able to leave the recorder near the board, and my RCA > 1/8 cable is about 8 feet, so it should be good. Thanks again for the tip on guitar center, hadn't even thought to look there
