i'd just like to state for the record that getting a DDS drive to work for reading audio is a really inexact science.

i've bought 7 or 8 CTD 8000rs drives over the last year and only ONE of them has been workable in audio mode.  the remainder failed, each for a different reason.  some wouldn't flash with the audio firmware, one wouldn't mount in audio mode, one read the tape with so many errors it was unusable, etc.

the one that worked pumped like a champion until very recently, when it developed some sort of transport issue.  it's been put to pasture, and i'm in the process of replacing it.  i'll be glad to document my experiences if anyone's curious.
