Title: Simple Question: AD1000 have Preamp Function?
Post by: grider on August 14, 2005, 03:29:07 PM
bit of a disagreement over in the comments to an etree torrent right now about this issue as it is listed in the lineage for a show; I've never used the AD1000 or looked at it closely, but I used to use a MiniMe, and it was my understanding that the MiniMe was an upgrade from the AD1000 in that it had the added feature (among other features) of a preamp, much as the V3 had done for the V2, and specifically what I am after is whether XLR's can be run directly into the unit as though they would be run into the MiniMe and V3, thanks

yes, the AD-1000 does have a pre-amp and can provide phantom power.  i have a bunch of tapes that are sourced schoeps > ad-1000.  and i'm nearly positive that gordon wilson (aka John Cocktolstoy) used it as a standalone pre/ad with the 480's for a while.

see tha manual here: http://www.taperssection.com/reference/pdf/Manual_ApogeeAD1000.pdf

page 11 specifically states that it will provide phantom power.

yep, variable gain.... just like a minime, only it sounds better and no stupid trim pots

the ad500e did not have a preamp but did have variable gain

from the manual...

(Note: The LEFT and RIGHT controls can be bypassed and the gain can be routed
to the multi-turn CAL pots if desired. See page 31 for details of this procedure.)
