Topic: ua 5 for matrix??

so I'm thinking of grabbing a ua5 when the owner of the v3 I've been using comes back to town.  my ceiling rig at Stella would be great for a matrix.  I've only heard one matrix done with a ua5 and liked what I heard.  anyway how does the sbd/aud split up?  is it 50/50??  or does it demend how hot the board/mics are?   looking at the ua5 I don't see how you could control the % of each.

I have run a couple matrixes with the UA-5.
Little Feat 8-7-04 & Tabla Rasa 11-20-04
I ran about a 70/30 mix for the Feat gig and about 60/40 for tabla rasa.

I like to set My Sbd feed first, I run RCA into the back of the UA-5 .
 I set the levels there as best I can if there is time for a sound check .
I then mark the spot in my head of the level for the Board feed then Turn the feed down and try to hear the levels of the Mic's . I then adjust the mic level further during the first track.

I have been pretty Pleased with the results so far.

why not just unplug the RCA's, that way you keep the level the same while you check your mic levels.  just a thought.

I always listen to the board feed alone first. I decide how good/crummy it sounds.  If it's a crummy board feed (flat, un-mixed, too much vocals etc.) then I run more aud in the mix.  I usually had best results with running mostly aud and trying to fill in a little with the board feed. but I've always had crummy board feeds so maybe if you have a well-mixed board feed you could get more board in there.

also, how far away from the board are your mics?  I start noticing delay issues around the 25-30 ft. range.

mics are around 20' or so.  maybe closer.  shouldn't have any delay issues.  the board tapes from Stella always come out great so 99% of time the board feed is very good.  they usually give me the xlr's out of the board.   really just wondering how you split the feed on the ua5.

splitting the feed -- the board goes into the analog in rca connectors on the back.  Right by these connectors is a single level control that allows you to adjust the level of the board feed being fed into the ua5.

The xlr connectors on the front of the ua5 are also active -- you plug the mics into the front of the ua5 and adjust their levels via two knobs on the front.  Thus, you control the relative levels of the mics and the board by adjusting the level controls on the front and back, respectively, of the ua5

hey - if you do the mics first, then you can switch them on/off with the Phantom power - no P48, no signal.
Then set the board levels, then turn the mics back on the check the mix.
No need to mark settings or unplug cables.

this is kind of  the way I have had the best results with

I have run a matrix 4 times with my mics/UA5..
first 3 runs I checked the SBD levels 1st and set them down a good bit from clipping then pushed on the phantom power button and set my mics where I like them.. all 3 sound alot like regular audience tapes, just filled out a bit more.

last Weds I ran the SBD as high as mymics, if not higher and it sounds amazing.
really even sound from the board with the clear vocals I sometimes miss with AUD tapes and just enough bass/drums/low end that I usually do not get from SBDs

Here's how I have been matrix-ing lately...

I run my mics on stage...so far using omnis...about 7-15 feet apart...and then mix the board feed in.

As far as levels go...I try to run both as high as possible...as if I was recording each alone...

Now - in my case...I'm lucky...the band is only running a rough drum mix and vocals in the PA...so that board mix is the perfect compliment to the onstage mics...

I have always been wondering if the volume knob on the back was gain, or was a pot?  Maybe this has been answered alreadyl, didn't search

The knob on the back of the UA-5 (next to the RCA jack) is a gain knob.
