Title: Video Capture Card
Post by: heath on April 28, 2005, 03:41:14 PM: Looking for a video capture card that I can use to record video from old VHS tapes to be put to DVD. I would also like to be able to record stuff off my cable box. I would like to keep it reasonably priced (I don't necessarily need "pro" capabilities). I think I'd like it to be Mac compatible, but if it's easier/cheaper to do it on my PC laptop, then so be it--i will.

Any reccommendations?

Post by: heath on April 28, 2005, 04:14:48 PM: probably do minor editing. If I was just gonna go straight to DVD, I'd probably get a standalone dvd recorder and be done with it. I think I'd like to have the capability to edit if I need to, even if I never do.

That was gonna be my recomendation if you didn't need to edit(standalone). As luck would have it, I'm heading over to the local computer shop today at 5ish. I'll see if I can dig some info up for you.

The hauppauge tv tuner cards/usb devices are highly respected in the HTPC community for video capture as well as for tuning in television programming. You can use these in conjunction with an "ir blaster" to control your cable box to enable vcr-like functionality via your pc.

Ed:

Can the ati card be used in a mac? If not, looks like Heath's limited to a windoze laptop and usb would be his only option

d'oh, i think you're right. ati makes cards for mac, but no all-in-wonder. its a great card for pc's tho.

I just picked up a PIII 750 to hook up to my television and stereo for music playback, Hi8 to DVD capture and to use it as a DVR. Any recommendation? Thanks!
