Voxengo MSED plug-in help
« on: October 09, 2007, 12:49:07 AM »
im using wavelab and this plug-in.  my question starts with wondering whether or not i need to invert polarity on the side channel or does the plug-in do that for me?  also just to be clear, when i mix this im decoding it to a stereo recording, right?  or am i encoding?  and if im needing to invert my polarity still, hows that done with wavelab?  im new to the WL so the help is much appreciated.

also just to be clear, when i mix this im decoding it to a stereo recording, right?  or am i encoding?  and what does the inline do for me? ???

thanks :coolguy:

The plugin takes care of the polarity and all you have to do is decide how much mid and side you like for your mix. All should be taken care as long as right is side and pointing left to stage(I have pointed right w/ okay results) and left is mid and yes you decode when you mix. You decode the two channels in stereo and you decide the mix and inline allows you to listen on the fly. Good luck and +t for going MS at shows. I love doing this w/ TL's at the right show.

+T thanks for the insight.  so inline is just to decide my mix values?  and both at 0 is even mix?  and how do you know when your burning the recording with to much gain?

All should be taken care as long as right is side and pointing left to stage(I have pointed right w/ okay results) and left is mid and yes you decode when you mix.

FWIW, if I'm thinking this through properly, the outcome when having the (+) lobe of the figure-8 facing R instead of L is just a reversed stereo image.

<00> Decoder

In both cases below, we're using the same decoder, which calculates L and R as follows:

L = M + S
R = M - S

The following two cases walk through the impact on the decoding results with the S mic's <01> (+) lobe facing L and (-) lobe facing R, and <02> vice versa, (-) lobe facing L and (+) facing R

<01> Proper configuration:  (+) lobe facing L and (-) lobe facing R

Given the proper configuration, the definition of our M and S channels is:

M = L + R
S = L - R (i.e. (+) lobe facing L, (-) lobe facing R)

So the "math" - substituting the above values above for M and S - works out to:

L =    M    +    S  (per our <00> Decoder definition above)
  = (L + R) + (L - R)
  =  L + R  +  L - R
  = 2L

R =    M    -    S  (per our <00> Decoder definition above)
R = (L + R) - (L - R)
  =  L + R  -  L + R
  = 2R

<02> "Improper" configuration, (-) lobe facing L and (+) lobe facing R

Our S channel lobes are reversed now, so we have a different definition of our S channel (the mid remains the same):

M =  L + R
S = -L + R
  =  R - L  (just another way of stating -L + R)

And since our decoder hasn't changed, the "math" - substituting the above values above for M and S - works out to:

L =    M    +    S  (per our <00> Decoder definition above)
  = (L + R) + (R - L)
  =  L + R  +  R - L
  = 2R

R =    M    -    S  (per our <00> Decoder definition above)
  = (L + R) - (R - L)
  =  L + R  -  R + L
  = 2L

So...all this to say that if you have the (+) lobe of the S channel facing R instead of L, the result is just a reversed stereo field.

Watch your levels as your decoding and make sure your not clipping.

True dat! As long as you are recording in 24bit, you should run your levels pretty well on the conservitive side. When I do most m/s recordings (80% of the time I set up my gear these days is m/s) I tend to run so my levels peak at about 12dB-8dB max. Normally I add gain to the mid and/or side caps in the final mix rather than subtract (though I have had to do the latter... YMSB a few week ago for instance where the crowd was easily 10dB louder than the band).
