just because it has a phone jack, doesn't mean it has a modem.
many companies today used what is called mini-pci for modems, ethernet and wireless devices.
some of these mini-pci cards have all 3 functionalities, while others only function as 1 or 2.

go to your device manager and see if anythingis listed under modem.
if not, then you will have to add a modem, either external USB or pcmcia(usb is cheaper)

they can be found for about $45 or so...you may have to order online.
check your local pc shops and chain stores(best buy/comp usa, etc...)

so its just called and 'external usb modem?'

that sounds easy enuf :)

one more quick q, why is it such a PITA to go from xp pro to 2k pro ??? the bootable disc of 2k pro becomes disabled because of that :P

what else, hmmm, im def gonna need more RAM/memory/couple other things, but its pretty nice and def heavy as hell :P

oh yeah, is it possible to burn windows xp pro WITH the sp1 service pack off my pc and onto the lappy ??? i have nero so i could burn a bootable disc

you need Darik's Boot and Nuke (http://dban.sourceforge.net/)
Freeware that works better than the costly stuff.
Be sure to be able to reinstall your OS and apps.
