Interface suggestions
« on: April 22, 2004, 10:23:48 PM »
OK,

here's the deal:

I am looking for a bit perfect laptop interface.  I want it to do at least 24/96, prefferably up to 24/192.  I'd like it not to break the bank.  It needs to work with OSX (panther) and spark.  Ideally its not something huge, but that fits nicely in my bag.

Throw me some options.  seeing if there is anything im not thinking of.

Jonny

ECHO Layla - pcmcia interface. 24/96 @ $800 (?bit perfect?)
M-Audio Firewire Audiophile. 24/96 @ 350 (?bit perfect? - pci interface is)
M-Audio Firewire 410. 24/96 @ 400 (?bit perfect?)
Ego Systems Quatafire 610 - firewire. 24/192 @ $500 (?bit perfect?)
Digigram VxPocket V2 - pcmcia. 24/48 @ $450 (bit perfect)

these were the cheaper ones I could find. only one that I KNOW to be bit-perfect is the VxPocket V2, but thats only 24/48.
the MOTU 828mkii is 24/96, firewire, rack mountable or standalone @ $750

thats why I put the "?bit perfect?"...wasnt sure.

looked at the Aardvark stuff, but they are pci only.
other than the Quatafire, everything for a laptop was 24/96 max...except the MOTU 896HD which does 24/192, but its 2RU and $1200!

www.digitalproaudio.com sells them for $325, I haven't found them cheaper anywhere else.

And they're 12v.

Dunno, I power it from the firewire bus.  I use an NCharge with the iBook to keep it running for around 4.5-5 hours with phantom power on.

im really worried about pushing 24/96 over usb.  i know it can be done but it can be troublesome.  i know that firewire can handle it for sure no problem.

Jonny, I've used the emi 2|6 for a while and have never had a problem with 24/96.  Every time I've seen someone with issues they've been running a PC.
