Tools One
Tools One is an extremely useful "effect" for various applications.

The level faders allow you to adjust the level of the left and right channel respectively. You can [Shift]-drag to make detailed settings. [Ctrl]-clicking a fader resets it to 0 dB (no level adjustment). Normally, adjusting one fader automatically moves the other as well, but you can make separate adjustments for the channels by pressing [Alt] and dragging.

The two Phase switches let you invert the phase of the left or right channel (or both).

The Algorithm buttons let you adjust the stereo sound image. When none of the buttons are activated, the stereo image will be preserved as is. MS process mode can be used in one of two ways:

To transform an incoming "regular" stereo signal so that it resembles a signal recorded according to the M-S (middle/side) principle. This technique is often used in broadcasting to record the direct signal source (usually a voice) using one microphone, and the ambience using a second microphone positioned at a 90_ angle.

To transform an incoming MS signal into a "regular" stereo signal (to simulate an "XY" recording technique, where neither microphone is placed directly in front of the signal source).

Channel Swap, finally, means that the left channel is assigned to the right side and the right channel to the left side.

Tools One is supposedly in the wavelab program as a vst plug-in, but I surely didn't find it when I was looking.  The rest that the help file said were there were except one other!

Figured it out D!

Go to options->organize master section plugins

okay now scroll down the list until you see VST, double click and scroll down the new list until you get to Tools One

Highlight Tools One and click on key sequence... I assigned into to F5

close that out, press F5 (or whatever you choose) and it should just pop up.

I will be taping an instore solo acoustic performance by Jimmy James of My Morning Jacket next Friday. I'm thinking this may present a perfect opportunity to try M/S. A full report will follow!

I thought about that... however I'm not sure how close I can get and I'm afraid with it being an in-store performance it will be chatty etc.

hmmmm blumlein has me tempted though....

well, if you can't get that close, why would you run m/s?  i actually don't think anything you do is gonna make this sound better in a store and what not.

My thinking on m/s is that I can get the card focused dead on the guitar and vocals and then afterwards I'll mix in the fig 8 to taste. Essentially I am anticipating this being almost a (gasp) mono tape. With m/s I can mix to taste later.

With blumlein I am afraid that the rear lobes will just pick up too much noise and chatter.

That's just what I'm thinking... maybe I'm looking at it wrong though.

Here's a couple of shots of Mule playing instore

at the bottom you can see Mike Juday and E-Scott taping...

you can kind of getting a feel for the room and see where I'm coming from.

ok...i say give m/s a shot...i think xy cards would have the least chatter because they don't have a rear lobe, but m/s will be more fun and getting to mess with the plugin would be good experience as well.

m/s is basically xy only you get to mix the stereo image to taste, which is why I think it may be useful in this case.

and of course I want to play with the plugin too  :D
