Title: Parts to make optical cables?
Post by: BCostigan on April 30, 2004, 07:35:54 AM
There probably aren't too many people making these at home.  Just curious if anyone knows where to get the cable and ends to make these?  I couldn't find much on this internet thing.........

I have a fiber termination tutorial coming up and while I won't use the lesson at work very often thought I'd put it to better use!

well since a fiber termination kit costs in the ballpark of $1000 i doubt too many people are making them. however we do have a few termination kits at work.  the connectors for audio tho are very different than what we use for gigabit ethenet and oc48 tho :O

Yea we got a cheapo kit for gige at work that i have never had a problem with, but the SBC guys that work on all the OC type circuts have the laptop thingy that does the magic and looks pretty pricey.  We got our kit at graybar.

I have access to termination equipment....I've looked everywhere for parts and can't find the toslink/optical ends anywhere.

I guess I assumed fiber is fiber....in terms or terminating it anyway.

I have seen vendors come into the office and "fuse" ends to fiber.  Looks like alot of work and special tools are needed.
