Title: soundard for playback
Post by: discgo on April 13, 2003, 08:42:39 PM
Hey all, I'm looking for a new soundard that will be used for playback only.  All I need is coax digital out and 24/96 support.  RCA analog outs would be nice but not needed.

Most of the ones I've found have way to many features that I don't need.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks, take it easy -

If you want to just send a digi signal, I think the cards like the Zoltrix or the ones with the same chip as the zoltrix should work.  I don't have any specific links to these cards, but I know they exist.

dont' laugh...
but you should hear the Edirol UA-5 for playback.
you'll be impressed.  It completely smoked my AP2496.

UA5 or EMI 2|6.  I use an EMI 2|6 to coax out to my DAC and it sounds surprisingly good...

I'd use my UA5, but the Oade digi mod removes that functionality...

that is a bummer about loosing that feature.  That is the 2nd best feature of the unit by far.  In fact, i might say that it plays back better than it records.

the UA-5 should get the vote for "best all around unit" last year.  You just can't beat it in this price point, and most things costing 2-4x as much as well.

I know, I didn't understand that "loss" correctly when I ordered it.  In all fairness, it does explain on Oade's website what happens when you get modded, and I didn't read it well enough...

I think the UA5 is astonishing for the price point.  I think it is far better at 24/96 than any other word length/sample rate (I surmise the dither routine must not be very good, as the loss of quality at 16/44 or 24/48 is greater than the sum of it's parts, IMO).  At 24/96 it is fantastic!

An absolutely KILLER bargain.
