Tascam DR-08 Recording Help
« on: March 08, 2013, 12:01:52 AM »
I apologize if this question was already asked.  Has anyone used a tascam DR-08 for recording shows.  If so were your recordings good?  What type of setup did you use?  The reason I ask is because my band has a DR-08.  We use it all the time to record practices and it is great to never forget song ideas.  But we used it for the first time to try and record a show and the results were not that great

I have one and have used it to record a few shows with great success. It is my emergency spare I keep in my briefcase, so I have not used it a great deal. I got a great recording of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, using Church CAFS into the deck directly.

"not that great" in what way(s)? Noise? Distortion?

The DR-08 can't handle high levels from line-in sources. A variable attenuator is helpful for recording line level sources.

Recording from mics should be fine as long as the mics are feeding it a signal that isn't too loud or soft. Unfortunately, the input level adjustment seems to be digital, meaning there's no real advantage to setting it at anything other than 0 and adjusting levels in post.

Sounds like you used the internal mics. I would invest in small mics ala the Church Audio line and a CA battery box or CA preamp, and then run that into the mic/line IN on the dr08 ;)
