The MMA6000 is the only piece of gear that I do not have a rechargeable power source for. I am sending too many alkaline batteries to the landfill which is unacceptable. :(
What rechargeable battery is everyone using to power this pre?
I would like to stick with an internal battery and for most shows would need about 4 hours of power.
Thanks,
Jamie

I have yet to find a good rechargable 9v for my mma6000. the one i did have didn't last very long and never seemed to put out enough power so one channel was always lower then the other.

That's what I was afraid of. Most rechargeable 9 volts seem to only put out about 8.4 to 8.6 volts.
Right now I'm leaning towards trying this one out;
http://www.nimhbattery.com/mh-96v230.htm (http://www.nimhbattery.com/mh-96v230.htm)
If I recall correctly, a standard alkaline 9volt is around 550 mah and runs the MMA6000 about 18 hrs? So in theory this battery should give about a 7 to 8 hour runtime.

Well that sounds like it would work.

That is what I use...I think I pay $1.15 or so from the shop I buy my blank MDs at here in Atlanta. I change them out about once a month because I use it quite often. I always wait till the green turns to red before swapping it out to reduce the amount of 9vs I use. i've also found that cheap no-name 9v cells are crap too...don't buy walgreens brand 9v!
If you get those rechargeable ones post your experience with them.

Used these in my mma6000 until i sold it. I now use them in my nbox.

How much time did you get on a full charge?

More important, how much time did you get once the red light came on? I get about 20 hours or more from energizer 9Vs, but around 3 hours once the red light comes on. This means I'm okay even if I find that the red light is blinking at intermission. I've never had a situation where it died before I could change it out at leisure. I think the NiMH cells die faster once they trigger the red light, so I haven't used them, if not they may be interesting.

I'm going to order a pair of the 230 mah batteries I linked to above. I'll post back some run times after I do some testing.
I decided to go with the 230 mah over the 300 mah because of the voltage difference. The 230's are 9.6v and the 300 are 8.4v.
I figured the LED on the mma6000 must change from green to red as the pre senses a drop in voltage to particular level. Hopefully the 230mah batteries will run in the same manner as an alkaline do, just not as long.

I have a few of these, which I haven't used (still sealed)....I bought a few but only used 1 because it lasted much longer than I thought. If you're interested in getting one cheap PM me.

Used 2 (every other show slot) of the batteries above in all 35 shows i recorded with my nbox
and used all 4 in only one show of the 35 ( a 2 hour show) so they definitely work ok.
The "how long" part i don't know, cause i charged them after every show. I am going to do a test
this week to see exactly how long they will last. As soon as i have my results i'll post here.

Just cross posting information I came across in another thread. Apparently there is a new li-poly 9v battery available. It is 500mah, which is about the same capacity as a 9v alkaline battery, but operates at a nominal 8.4v.

If you want to use use these, be sure to test first. I tried to gang four in series to run a DaviSound preamp, which is not high current draw, and they choked up. If I briefly shorted the leads of the battery box they got it on, but I was not happy with this solution. Regular 9Vs work like a charm with this battery box, also with a five-battery box (both built for me by Chris at Sound Professionals).

I finally got around to running some tests with rechargeable 9V.
First, I grabbed two no-name ones from Ebay, both DOA. Seller was cool and refunded all money.
Next I got the following:

and

Here are the results of my battery testing:
Battery test for Powerex NiMH 9.6 volt, 230 mah battery in the MMA6000
Test equipment: DPA4060 > DPAMMA6000 > R09
Test Notes:
--Recorded ambient sound, MMA6000 set to 20db gain.
--Batteries were new and conditioned by charging them fully then,
completely discharging them 5 times before testing.
--Charger used -Powerex MH-C490F
--Batteries were left to charge for approximately 1 hour after
the Charger's LEDs went from red to green.
--The charger took about three hours to go from red to green when
the batteries where fully discharged. So figure on a three to four hour
charge time if they are completely dead.
I ran two different tests one time with each battery then averaged the results
Test A -- Recorded about 4 hours at a time then paused between a couple of hours
to a day between recording sessions.
Results--Average total run time = 18.5 Hours
(Red LED was on for about the last 1 1/2 Hours)
Test B -- Recorded nonstop till battery died.
Results--Average total run-time = 16 Hours
(Red LED was on for about the last 1 1/2 Hours)
No noticeable loss in sound quality while the red LED was on.
I am quite impressed with the time, almost as good as DPA reports for Alkaline batteries.
One note of importance, after charging the batteries, I measured them at about 11VDC!!!
After about an hour or two that would drop to about 10.5VDC. A new Alkaline is usually about
9.3 to 9.6VDC.
I also ran these in my Sonosax SX-M2 and got about 2 1/2 hours before they dropped to the point where
the pre started to distort. 4 of these would cover most two set shows comfortably.
-
Figured I post a little follow up about the Powerex 9.6 (230)volt batteries.
I have been running these in my MMA6000 for about 5 months, with no problems. I would run them about four hours each time then recharge them. This worked fine until last Saturday, when about 2 hours into a show, on a fresh charge, the battery died. ???
Went home and tried the second battery out in the pre. Died in about the same time frame.
Every previous test I did with these batteries with that pre gave me at least 16 hours run time.
I've since charged and tested both batteries several times and they both are consistently running the pre 18+ hours.
So what I'm guessing is that the batteries where getting a memory from the small discharge cycle and completely draining them refreshed them? Any thoughts on this?

There is a new 300mAh battery out. It's the highest capacity I've seen.

Isnt that still 200mAh below a standard 9v battery off the shelf @ WalMart?

(note, I have been using Walgreens Alkalines for about 8 years and not personally gotten a bad one yet. Knock On Wood. I heard years ago that they were manufactured by Duracell, but don't know if it is still, or for that matter, was ever the case)
