First sighting: PS603RM, tiny Sanyo recorder with 4 mics!
« on: December 13, 2008, 07:32:15 PM »
Released on Nov 21, first posting on TS:

Main features:
4 internal mics, line/mic in w/ plug in power
Records in PCM, max 16/48
4GB internal + microSDHC slot
10 hours rec time on one AAA battery
Tiny: 35.4mm × 120mm × 13.9mm
Weight: 58g (including batteries)
Rec frequencies: 40 ~ 23,000 Hz (using external mics), 60 - 20,000Hz (internal mics)

Verdict: Sanyo has totally missed the 24bit train. Too bad. The internals are as elaborate as Zoom H2, but it remains to be seen if the internals can handle high SPL, and whether the line/mic is is useful. With the current price tag, it'll still be behind H2, DR-1, and hardly much cheaper than R-09 or even R09-HR. The form factor is nice though!
My guess is that it'll be rebranded for the Yamaha PocketRak series overseas.

Keep us posted.

The advantage of a rig like this is if it could record four tracks simultaneously.

I'm thinking either Ambisonic, or mics + soundboard (with attenuator on sbd input).  You could even just hang this thing in front of the console if you were mixing a show.  A great way to diagnose your FOH show after the fact.

TINY is right...! That's almost TOO small!

And micro SD too...

look at the size of the hand compared to the device...

In USA, Sanyo recorders are sold under the Yamaha label.  The
PS603RM looks like it uses the design of the Yamaha Pocketrak 2G.
(The 2G has two mics.) I agree that this form factor is almost too
small to be easily operated by someone with adult-size fingers.

I was skeptical of the MicroSD cards, too.  But when I took a look
at the Yamaha Pocketrak CX a couple of months back, I found that
the MicroSD card worked well.  The CX has a push-to-release slot
for the MicroSD, rather than the tight-fit-grab-with-tweezers slot
found in cell phones.  So i's easy to install and remove the MicroSD
card.

ZipZoomFly and SuperMediaStore offer a Sandisk 8GB MicroSD card for
$33, shipping included.  The package includes an SDHC adapter so you
can insert the card into a typical flash card reader.

The Yamaha Pocketrak CX is larger than the 2G, and also has quieter
preamps. But it's not in the same league as the R09HR, Olympus LS-10
and Tascam DR-1.  My guess (and it's entirely a guess) is that the
Sanyo with 4 mics will also be an underperformer when it comes to
sonic quality.
