USB > 3.5mm audio cable possible?
« on: November 26, 2008, 01:41:40 AM »
I have a car stereo with a USB input.  If I hook it up to my ipod, it will charge it and read the audio.

Is it possible to hack a USB cable and solder on a 3.5mm jack to the audio leads of the USB wiring?

Anyone done this?
A google search turned up empty for me.

thanks!

Yes it can be done I have done it to a nano but USB input on your car should be for a external hard rive or is it for an ipod? If its for an IPOD then we can assume that this is not a computer based USB connection and simply a means of supplying power and getting audio from your ipod.. You will need a set of cheap headphones and probe around until you get the audio from your ipods connector... Not easy to do but its doable. The USB port on your car stereo should be the same as your ipod USB cable so once you figure out your ipods outs then you know how to make the cable. There will be a common ground between left and right make an audio file with you saying the words left left left on the "left side" and right right right on the "right" side that way you dont get your left and right all mixed up.

So your chain would be: ipod > dock connector jack out > y-cable /  USB jack for powering only > car stereo
\   3.5mm jack for audio input > car stereo
Maybe not what you're looking for, but does this help?

Thats pretty cool.. I think that should work for him. He can go out of the headphone jack.. Provided there is enough room to plug that box into the face of his radio.

Cool!  Thanks for that link sunjan.

I should've clarified what I'm trying to do...
I installed a Pioneer Premier DEH-P600UB
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013NY8X8

The USB connect works great with my iphone.  It charges it and allows me to browse and play all its contents.

What I realized now is that sometimes when we are camping or on trips in my VW van, we like to watch DVD's on my powerbook...hence the need for a 3.5mm jack into the Pioneer head unit.

I'm still not sure if that device will work or not.  The Pioneer USB may need to be activated somehow for it read in the audio, but I'm not sure.

The unit does have a 3.5mm aux in on the back of it, buy my install leaves almost zero room back there to even plug in a right-angle mini-jack...so I was hoping to use the USB.

anyway, thanks again, I'll buy one of these and try it out.

Well I ordered one of those devices up above...
it looks in the pics as though it is a full-size male USB, but in fact it is not.
It's a smaller USB made for the HTC phones.

so unless I can find an adapter for that, it won't work for what I want to do.

I asked Semsons if they had/made a straight full-size USB > 3.5mm converter, and they said nope.

Guess I'm still looking...

just wondering
why would you want to do this?
seems charging the iPod at the same time would be a good thing

sometimes I iike to use my powerbook or other non-usb device through my stereo system...
mostly it's for when we are on road trips and want to watch a movie on the laptop.

but, yes, when the ipod or iphone is the playback, it's nice to have it charging and playing.
