"Coloring" windscreens
« on: June 08, 2011, 11:24:50 PM »
I received some flesh-colored windscreens as part of an auction. I'd prefer black, so would there be any acoustic affect from using a Sharpie on them?

The sharpie ink might break down the foam and cause it to lose form or perhaps even "melt."  Krylon makes a spray paint that is safe for foam, rubber and plastics.  I think it is called "fusion," or something similar...  Do you have an extra windscreen you could try the sharpie on?

Yes - anything on the windscreen will affect the sound - don't do it.

If you want black, buy a black windscreen.

Some RC car enthusiasts dye plastic chassis with RIT dye.
You might try it on some spare foam first.

LoL- anything you put on foam will block the pores and change the sound - DON'T DO IT!

Sew some black speaker grill fabric over the top of them. This would be an acoustically transparent solution. You could probably even find some for free or very cheap. Surely there is a blown speaker somewhere that no longer needs its grill cloth. Either this or some of Windcutters over the top of them would be your best bet.
