My desktop just up and quit this morning.
« on: July 30, 2003, 08:21:30 AM »
Hey all, I woke this morning and put set 1 from 7/19 Alpine and I go off and take my shower , get Ben ready to go to grandma's. Come back and the computer is off. I ask Ben if he turned it off (3 year olds can figure out anything). SO I press the power and nothing happens. Check the power strip and everything is ok there. I think it's just the power supply needs replacing but I thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas. I didn't have time to look at it this morning as I needed to get to work. But tonight I'll be looking to see what it is. I'm 99% sure it's a power issue and not a HD crash. As if the HD crashed it would still get power just not boot. SO any ideas?

The only other thing that can cause this problem is a fried motherboard...which I have done four times in four years (college dorm rooms and computers don't go to well together)!

Hmmm, Could be. That would suck, but not as bad as a fried HD. Looks like If thats the case I'll be upgrading the processor to (its a Athalon XP 1700+ series now) and use the old one in a PC for Ben.

There is another thing it could be, which happened to me this past year. Somehow the processor and its heat sink became slightly separated, and as such, the heat sink was no longer doing its job. Because of that, my processor's auto-shutdown feature would kick in and suspend power from going through the system.

You'll know if it's this when you go back and check it later. If it turns on later when the chip is cool, then this is a possibility. If it shuts down again after a minute or two and won't turn back on until the chip cools again, it is a likely candidate for what's wrong.

I thought it was power supply too, when it happened.

if it won't come on at all...as in no power lights whatsoever....first check the obvious places, ie. the power cable.  try reseating it at the back of the power supply, if that doesn't work, try holding in the power button as you plug the cable in to the power supply.
if still no power, i'd open up the case and reseat the power supply to the motherboard...yeah i know, how would that have gotten unplugged, but ya gotta check everything.  while you're in there, reseat the RAM and check all the other cables to make sure you've got solid connections.
that's all the advice you get for free today, from now on it'll be $2.99 per minute of tech support, and an extra $0.50 to talk dirty.  ;)

Unless your power cable developed a short your most likely problem is a dead power supply.
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

I doubt that anything got flipped it's pretty hard to get to. I'll open it up and pick up a power supply this weekend and see what goes. It's a good machine. But I'm looking to build a new one soon and this one would become my wife's and son's. So it will all work out.

Well I remembered that I had an extra new case (that I planned on using to build my super computer) that had a power supply in it. So I pulled it out and out it in thismachine and it's all good now. WHich is great news as I feared a complete loss. Oh well back to your regularly scheduled program ;D

P.s. Thanks for all the input

my wife is always amazed that I know how to fix a computer. She did make a funny comment on how it took 1 day for me to fix the PC when she has been waiting weeks for me to finish the trim on the kitchen. I just told her " It's all about Priorities Baby" ;). She laughed .

I've been putting my ALpine>Creek Masters onto the HD so I can track them this weekend and get them out there.
