Shure VP88 owners step inside
« on: August 20, 2007, 01:03:37 AM »
just picked a shure vp-88 up off of ebay.  i plan on using it for ENG/film work.

was wondering if anyone who has run one (or currently does) could chime in here with what they liked and disliked about the mic and any tip or tricks about dialing it in.

also looking to get a suspension mount for it.  the shure a88sm looks wonderful, but i would like to find something more affordable (although i pretty much want the flexibility the mount offers... sliding into a camcorder shoe is a plus).  mic diameter is 27mm (1 1/16")

and i want to get a windscreen... something that is deadrat like.  about 40mm inside diameter.

thanks in advance!

very nice sounding mic for loud sfx applications , busy streets , football crowd , fire works ,
on street  music recording when the self noise is not to much important
a bit noisy for low level signals so don't try catch any low level  atmosphere
y
working very well with all my mixers ( sd /sqn /wendt0 and recorders 744 and hhb

I have many customers that have used this mic at one time or another.  Very convenient single point design, and yes, a bit noisy for some low level applications.  My impression is the stereo imaging is not consistent for moderate to far distance source field work, but most useful for effects recording closer to the sound source.

to the top... any other feedback?

i will probably be using it for sound effects and interviewing... is it useful as a camcorder mic?  i imagine it will be better then the built in mic, but do i really need a shottie?

(fwiw, i actually never got the first one due to some ebay issues, but the new one is in route, and it appears to come with the a88sm, so it worked out for the best)
