I'm almost finished w/my new "used" stereo upgrade. I have not heard it yet...still waiting for some pieces to arrive, but here is what I ended up with.
no source as of yet....
Rotel RC-1070 preamp
AR performance series interconnects
B&K ST-140 poweramp (70 or 105w, not sure)
MIT term 5 speaker cables
Mirage SFX-8 sub
Magnepan MMGs
all i've heard thus far is just the sub/maggie combo through my old piece of shit sony integrated. I'm so impressed w/just the speaker upgrade, I can't even imagine the detail and energy that good componants are going to throw at me! very pumped.
I was telling Carl last night that the maggies have found their preffered spot in my room, and the soundstage / stereo image is better than i've ever heard,....anywhere. I've had such pleasure listening to music lately. Such well spent money!
Best thing....I've spent EXACTLY $1,000 on the whole setup (my plan was $5k). The only new gear I bought was the cables. I still need a good source CD deck (anything that excells at redbook...seeking an old Marantz), then i'll be done for now. I've got plans for a benchmark DAC-1 in the future, possibly replacing the preamp...but we'll see.

Glad you're enjoying your Maggies, Nick - welcome to the Maggie fan club! I'm still in the honeymoon phase after picking up my Maggies late last fall. Loving it! But I'm feeling the pull towards the 1.6s. :o It never ends...

I have to admit, this has been such a fun experiment. I'm jelous of Nick & his Maggies, I wish I had the room for a set, they seem to have such rabid fans. I wish I could join the club! Low buck stereo is soo much fun to find. It has been an obsession with me as of late, I love buying & selling components so I can try them in my system. It's really the only way to find what will work for you in your system. Nick has taken a different aproach as far as what he is trying to acomplish from his home rig but is getting the same result as I. We keep burning our meals because we can't move away from the sweet spot ;D

It does never end. And I have you guys to blame. After listening to Nicks +T excellent STS9 show on my 1.6's, the next day I ordered a St-250. Now I can't sleep until I get that thing.

I was just thinking last night how much I enjoy good hifi. I sat down to do some work (have been working too much lately) and tossed in a Garcia and Grisman CD. After the second tune I couldn't even pay attention to my laptop anymore, had to just listen and relax...
This stuff is worth far more in enjoyment than the monetary investment, IMO!

Ouch but seriously, I hope Wiggler didn't go out & buy one after the STS9 recording b/c (no offense to Nick) but the sound was dialed in that place & we all know that helps. The ST250 is the cat's ass plain & simple but you can get similar results without spending all the change. Hell I don't even know why I bothered commenting on this b/c I sure as hell spend more than I need to on audio gear & have to have what I want when I want it ;D

No it wasn't just the Sts9 tape it's been in the works for about 8 months now. It's just that tape that broke the camels back and made me take the jump. I also downloaded at couple tracks of the same show of Carls recording it is also very nice. I just really like the sound of the ST250 and the Imaging. I also like the idea of it eliminating phasing issues and the way the patterns can be adjusted to suit the room.

if you haven't, download the garaj mahal show from 3-6-03. Listen to how big that soundstage is reproduced on your maggies. You'll shit.
I romanced the ST-250 for 10 years before buying one. Even before I was actively taping. You da man!

Sweet!!! I can't wait to see this thing. Wiggler, what is the ETA on this thing? I think Rob and I will have some pretty good seats at ABB at DTE and you would be able to clamp on if yu wanted. I think we are doing that Drive By Trucks show coming up as well as ABB in Lansing, WSP in Rochester and Clev. I might be going down to Comerica to do Robert Randolph and stuff too. One problem is that the wife and I are headed down to Columbus tomorrow to test drive a Baja. It's a '97 with 454 and a really decent price. Another problem is that they just opened a McMachen Marine next to Home Depot (my other fav store) out here in White Lake and they sell Baja as well. Guy was trying to talk me ino a 20' Outlaw, but they only have the 302 in them.
At any rate I can't wait to run next to this thing once you get it. Hell, I might just patch! :)
