Title: best for downsampling?
Post by: Ed. on December 17, 2003, 05:18:03 PM
So i've read that wavelab is the best for dithering because its the same as apogee.  what about downsampling?  what rules that realm?  I have access to adobe audition, soundforge 7.0 and wavelab 4.01b  can also get just about any other audio program, so the options are pretty much limitless.

Does anyone have a preference on which is better? and why?  Also, while i'm at it, which is better for recording in the field.  To be honest, i switch things up just about every time i record and down sample as of late.  but i'd really like to just start sticking with one.

thanks
ed

i think you should stick with sound forge for downsampling, it is supposedly very accurate and precise.

i use SF for my downsampling and see many many tapers using it, wavlab would be the standard for dither

i use wavelab for resampling, have never had any issues....and from what i understand it is way faster than the other programs (at least CEP).  it takes me about 3-4 minutes to resample an hour long set from 48 to 44.  i've heard CEP can take around an hour.  not sure about SF.

i use wavelab for recording/finding peaks(no dithering for me), and samplitude 6.0 for resampling/normalizing/saving 8)seems to work great this way since there are some glitches in wavelab 4.0c resampling ;)

oh and wavelabs editing is the SHIZ-NIT 8)

what are the glitches in wavelab resampling?  i've heard that the uv22hr dither in 4.0c is not up to agogee specs, but never heard anything about the resampling issues before.  ruh-roh.

it is only in 4.0c, in 4.0g it is all corrected

dithering or resampling or both?

the issue, i believe, was in dithering and not resampling, however I am not entirely sure.

dither = wavelab
resample = soundforge, samplitude

got it, so what should i do with adobe audition, just keep it around cuz it looks cool? :)

thats the way I am with ProTools.
after using Digital Performer, PT seems klunky/awkward

Yeah, same here - after using CEP, I find ProTools and Soundforge clunky and awkward.  All depends on what you're used to, I guess...
