more audacity questions
« on: January 16, 2017, 11:17:53 AM »
I am currently running windows 8, ( it was a free laptop) and I can't discover the rouge 121 gigs that are hiding. I have 920 gig hd, 187 g accounted for, and 620 gig available. I'm no mathematician but somethings not adding up. It's all from when I ask audacity NOT to save work. Anyone know where to find these files? I found and deleted them once before, but I'm at a loss as to how I did that. Thanks

Howdy Chris!
Try this software we use at work to locate what's on a hard drive- windirstat
it can be downloaded from multiple sources, but here is a solid one:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/windirstat/

it is pretty easy to use with good visual and directory tree views.

Thanks Rock! I'm running it now, but not sure how to use it
it will tell you what is taking up the disk space and where that disk space is located.
Then, for instance, if you see xxGb's in temp files, go erase them. Often times things like you describe are in log files; the windirstat should tell you where.
Quick search for How to's: (IOW, I've not read/watched them)

Audacity Preferences has a tab for Directories (I am on a mac version but they should close to the same)

Go there and you can see where the current folder is, and if you like, change it to someplace visible so you have easier access.

Chris, did windirstat show you the data is in Audacity? if so, this link appears to show you where the temp folder Audacity uses is located.
It may be that it is holding a bunch of your old workflow in the temp folders. From this specific link I can't tell if it is 100% OK to delete the files in this temp folder, but with most Windows applications it should be.

Chris

Try running this tool, Directory Report, as an administrator
That way it can find hidden files

Is there a way to set exported files so that the file name does NOT have a "-" before the number?
In an older version I never had the issue but in the recent version I do.
For example, I select export multi and name the tracks as...
Band2017-04-20.t

It exports all the tracks/la else but names them...
Band2017-04-20.t-01, -02, -03

I want it to simply be...
Band2017-04-20.t01, 02, 03

It is annoying to go back and edit them out before converting to flac
Thanks

Unfortunately, not that I know of. I use renaming software to do the job later. xACT has it as a feature, on the mac side. I assume there is a renaming tool in windoze, or it might even be native?! Select multiple > right-click > rename ???
