You mean you popped the card out, into a card reader in your PC, and ran this utility on it?

If you did, and the card otherwise works other places, then the card can be ruled out as the culprit.

So finally got the update done, thanks all. Came down to formatting the fresh card in the device rather than fat32 in my PC. That apparently was the difference, once I formatted the card in Fiio the update worked. The instructions in the "about f1" folder clearly state to format in the device, I'd not looked at those.  :facepalm:  thanks all, most appreciated!!!
