Questions about a toslink
« on: January 02, 2014, 08:43:12 PM »
I have a standalone Minidisc Player/Recorder. It has a toslink in the back..I'd like to hook it up to my Laptop to get the digital benefits of a transfer. How would I go about doing it? I'm assuming these toslink > USB converters wouldn't work? or ?

Depends; some converters resample, others don't. For example, the usbpre2 will convert to coax spdif just fine or send the signal via usb to a computer. That's an interface specific question really.

Ideally it would be:
MD optical out > usb interface > the PC
OR
MD optical out > optical in on your PC.

Then just setup your DAW software to see the signal and do some test runs to make sure it is fast enough for the recording and doesn't drop samples.
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear

AFAIK, all the Sound Crapsters resample your incoming data...  So your digital transfer is compromised at the very beginning...

What kind of deck do you have???  I did a recent MD project and ran MD Player > TOSLINK > HOSA OLD-276 > SPDIF > Tascam HD-P2.  Then I just copied the WAV files over to the PC...  If you have a deck with a digital input that's probably easier to deal with...

***Do you have PHISH, VIDA BLUE, JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT or any other Phish related DATs/Tapes/MDs that need to be transferred???  I can do them for you!!!***

I will return your DATs/Tapes/MDs.  I'll also provide Master FLAC files via DropBox.  PM me for details.

Sony PCM R500 > SPDIF > Tascam HD-P2
Nakamichi DR-3 > (Oade Advanced Concert Mod) Tascam HD-P2
Sony MDS-JE510 > Hosa ODL-276 > Tascam HD-P2

So if I do

Sony MDS-JE320 > HOSA OLD-276 > SPDIF > Edirol R-09HR

would that be all digital?

then I just copy the wav over

The Edirol does not have SPDIF/digital input.

Yes, the Microtracker has a SPDIF input.  There was a Marantz PMD670 in the Yard Sale, but that sold...  Tascam also has a handheld that has a SPDIF input, but I can't remember the model# now...

MAudio also sell a internal soundcard that does what you want (Audiophile 192) and an external device  (M-Track Plus)...  But you'll ahve to do some tweeking to get them to work right, as with all interfaces...

Honestly, I don't recommend a "soundcard", but instead suggest getting a recorder with SPDIF (or toslink) input.  That way you don't tie up your PC doing a transfer, and you don't have to deal with all the other technical stuff you'll have to go through to get it to work right...
