Fyi- no need to spend the extra money for 1080p on a screen that small. Vizio makes some decent LCD screens that would definitely be in your price range. Check out Costco.

Vizio is not made by Samsung, but they do purchase the panels from different manfacturers and Samsung may be one, although I don't know for sure.  The Vizio plasma I previously owned had a panel made by LG.

Scott, ecost.com runs specials all the time on factory refurbed Westinghouse LCDs.  My boss just bought a 46" refurb for well under a grand and is pretty happy with it.

Here's a couple that popped up -

if she will mostly be watching SD tv/DVD and the odd HDTV content I would look at the Panny plasmas, they have one of the better scalars

I remember seeing some good reviews of the Vizio models, they are very reasonably priced too.

Don't know about that model in particular, but Hitachis are reviewed very well.  That's a GREAT deal right there.

you guys have any opinions on how a 42" 720p plasma (most likely a panasonic or hitachi like the one above) would be for gaming?  I rarely game but will probably pick up one of the new consoles after I get an HDTV.  I know there is the screen burn in issue with earlier plasmas and that the ps3 and 360elite have 1080p.  So I guess my main questions are:

1) is the difference between 720p and 1080p really that great with these games on a 42" screen?

2) is the screen burn-in still an issue?

Keep in mind that I am a pretty infrequent gamer.  I won't touch a game for 6 months and then I will buy something that looks cool on a whim, play it for a month straight, and then not touch the box again for months.

My main uses for this TV will be watching regular DVDs and HD sports.  A 42" 720p plasma seems like the ideal set for the area I am considering, my budget, my intended uses, and my visual tastes.  And I don't like the blacks and darks on most lcds I have seen.  But there is the gaming thing which isn't even really that important to me, I just don't want to fuck up the TV.

I'll watch a baseball game where there is a YES logo or ESPN bottom line or something in there for a few hours straight and don't notice any burn in.  Apparently most modern TVs will shift the picture ever so slightly to keep things from burning.

YMMV, but I haven't noticed any burn in on my 42" Panny Plasma.  TH-42PX600U was the model I got.

Not sure if you'll see a huge difference.  I have my cable box set to output 1080i only so that there isn't any renegotiation time when switching channels.  That being said the picture looks great, but I'm not too sure I could *REALLY* tell the difference between the 720p broadcast and when it was resampled to 1080i.  My TV doesn't do 1080p so I dunno if you can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p.

With a 42" screen I don't think you would be able to tell the difference at normal viewing distances. (around 2x the screen width or farther away).

Just got an email from newegg. $899.00 with promo code

Promo Code Price
(EMC918HOAV01): $899.99

Is this a decent 42" LCD? I really dont know much about them but it seems like a decent price for a 42". I might get one for the bedroom if they are worth it. I just noticed its Recertified so thats why its such a bargain. Oh well I will still post in case anyone wants one.

IIRC, Westinghouse TV's are usually pretty well reviewed.  Don't have any experience with that particular model, though.
