Windscreens for Schoeps MK4
« on: June 30, 2011, 03:56:03 PM »
Looking for windscreens to my MK4s!

I want them to be small (non bulky) and high quality (in the sense that they alter sound as little as possible).
What are the options?
Thanks!
N.

The B5D are outstanding screens with a plastic basket inside to make the fit tighter... I've run consistently with my Mk41s.

Not the cheapest but I love mine.  Also not too big (very low profile)

(I don't know why this was the first link that popped up; B&H and everyone else sells them too).

I've been using Windtech 1200's... keep them on there all the time (in use or in the bag) to keep the dirt away.  Maybe they color the sound horribly and I just don't know it, but I don't think so.

They are OK indoors or on a calm day.  On a windy day I use the "big ass shures".  I think those do kill the highs somewhat, but that is the cost of killing the wind.

Back when I had Schoeps, I used three:

  • Shure A81WS -- for outdoors
  • DPA UA0896 -- for indoors when I didn't know if wind from the HVAC system would pose an issue
  • Schoeps B5 -- for indoors when I knew HVAC system wouldn't pose a problem, but wanted a little protection just in case

If I had to choose one pair, it'd be Shure A81WS.  If I had to choose two, I'd add the DPA UA0896.

Alternatively, if you want seriously heavy duty wind protection, check out Rycote's offerings.

The Schoeps B5's will do a much better job than one would think and they are the right price. I run them 99% of the time,  have done so with 4s / 5s, 4vs, and 41s, and have never heard windnoise on my recordings even having run under a Big Ass Fan or some serious HVAC systems.

I also have two pairs of a81ws screens for running outdoors, but they are too large to comfortably tote around.

I would use the DPA screens indoors and DPA+Dead rats for outdoor use for more lo-pro. If I didnt care about size, I would DEF use the "big ass shures" outdoors. I have BOTH and thats how I use mine. I have NEVER had wind noise on my recordings....YMMV
