DPA UA0896 great windscreens....even in rooms with heavy air flow from vents and ceiling fans, never had a problem...looking forward to trying them outside this year.

RobC, FWIW  my friend Jane ran the DPAs at vibes last year and had some wind noise on some of her recordings from early in the day when it was windiest.

I ran the Shure big ass screens and had no problems. Even Warren Haynes acoustic came out OK. There is some very minor noise that is audible between tunes, but other than that no problems.

i use the dpa's.  in telluride, where it is windy most of the day >:(  myself and others took to placing some speaker grille fabric from rad shak over the end of the cap in addition to the windscreen and had surprising results; cut a LOT of the wind without interfering(sp) with the lows too much.  give it a whirl in those Heavy wind venues.

Some information on windscreens.

http://www.filmebase.pt/Wind.html

I recently investigated windscreens and decided to go with DPA.
I did find this information on adverse affects of windscreens and
high frequency roll off.
I found this at the schoeps site.Adverse Effects on Sound Quality:

In general, when comparing two windscreens which are equally
efficient, the smaller one will always have a greater influence on
the sound. Conversely, if two windscreens have the same size, the
more efficient one has the greater adverse influence on sound
quality, usually impairing a microphone's frequency response as well
as the polar pattern of directional microphones. It is thus
advisable to select a windscreen that is no more efficient than
necessary, and as large as feasible.

Acoustic foam windscreens generally do no more harm than to cause
some roll-off at high frequencies. This can be corrected either
through electronic equalization or by choosing a brighter microphone
capsule (e.g., MK 3). Hardshell basket windscreens, however, produce
irregularities in high-frequency response (depending on the type of
capsule) which cannot be easily compensated for and which color the
sound noticeably. With pressure-gradient transducers they also
reduce low-frequency sensitivity and directivity.

The use of hollow-sphere foam windscreens on pressure-gradient
transducers leads to much less roll-off and coloration at high
frequencies, but also reduces low-frequency sensitivity and
directivity.

Peace out,
Wiggler

for normal wind situations i would run something like the dpa's....but for the real deal at places like gorge etc.... i would go with the big ass shure's.

oh....i won't be needing any at the gorge this summer!!!   ;)

i can't wait to rock out the mk5's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   ;D

I've used both, and IMO the DPA UA0896 are great windscreens, but the Shure A81WS are better (and more expensive).

The price at sonic sense is in the range you will find these anywhere...unless you can find a used pair.

The DPA UA0896 are made for ~19mm mics, your 21mm will be just fine - a little snug, but just fine.

FWIW, the Shure A81WS are ~20mm and will also be fine a few mm in either direction.

The above info is also in the Archival section under the Flying Mics thread.

Kicking an old thread since this topic doesn't warrant a new one.

I have the big ass shures and they work great.  Thinking of picking up a second pair of screens for when I'm running two pair for comps, etc. I need to keep the smoke out and sometimes deal with fans.

Trying to decide between the DPAs and another pair of the big ones.  Do they sound any different??

I like the way the big shures are constructed to create a lot of air around the vents.  How is the dpa constructed? The schoeps link seems to suggest bigger is better.  But I know that isn't the whole story.

Not surprisingly, small high-efficiency windscreens are found to have the worst effect on the sound.

Thanks!

Trying to decide between the DPAs and another pair of the big ones.  Do they sound any different??

The DPA UA0896's have single density foam, unlike the dual-density Shure A81Ws.  The UA0896 foam density is roughly between the Shure A81WS's airy core foam and A81WS's much more dense outer foam.  I've used both and haven't noticed any difference, but then again I've not done any direct comps.  I imagine the Shure's attenuate a bit more HF, but nothing substantial enough for my ears to pick up.  Besides, when I'm using the Shure's, it's because I *need* the protection and any HF attenuation is offset by preventing nasty, unpleasant wind rumble.

FWIW, I have three pairs of windscreens - a very thin pair (similar to the Olsen Audiuo 1200 series) that function really more as pop screens and smoke protection;  the DPAs for indoors when I'm worried about ventilation breezes and smoke protection;  and the A81WS for outdoors.

I guess I'll get some lighter screens to play with. Thanks!

It would be interesting if we could get someone with some real test gear to do some tests.
